1) Best of Bolivia

Santa Cruz - Sucre - Potosi - Uyuni Salt Flats - La Paz - Lake Titicaca - La Paz

Often overshadowed by its high-profile neighbours, Chile, Brazil and Peru, Bolivia is a traveller's dream - cheap, beautiful and full of culture. Bolivia is a mountain climber's paradise, boasting an impressive count of 6000 plus mountain peaks to conquer, although its glaciers and ice fields are shrinking rapidly due to global warming. Its mountainous landscape, dotted with traditional villages dating back to Incan days, attracts scores of adventurous types who enjoy hiking, climbing, mountain biking and rafting. For a comparatively small, landlocked country, Bolivia is also home to a surprising number of superlatives. Bolivia has the world's highest city, the world's largest salt flat, the world's highest navigable lake and the world's most dangerous road.

It's impossible to be bored or sometimes even relax in Bolivia whose people held onto their native Indian and Incan roots and still live off the land on subsistence farms. You'll come to love the women's bell-shaped skirts, shiny black plaits and babies slung casually over their backs in colourful blankets. You'll also come to love the men's intricately woven jackets and bright pointy hats, but not their habit of chewing coca leaves constantly to boost stamina and reduce hunger.

Our Best of Bolivia adventure gives you, naturally, the very best of the best of Bolivia!

2) Boliva, a Fascinating Rainbow

La Paz - Sucre - Potosi - Uyuni Salt Flats - La Paz - Lake Titicaca Madidi NP - La Paz

From snow-capped peaks in the Apolobamba range of the Andes to tropical lowland basins in the Amazon, the Madidi landscape encompasses an area larger than Vermont and New Hampshire combined. The landscape includes an incredible range of ecosystems, from high altitude grasslands to clouds forests, lowland tropical forests to pristine lowland savannas. Madidi is part of a vast wilderness that includes neighboring protected areas in Bolivia and southeastern Peru.

Madidi is one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet. The park is home to over 1,000 bird species, representing a whopping 11% of the world's 9,000 bird species. Madidi contains large populations of Latin America's most charismatic wildlife species: jaguar, spectacled bear, maned wolf, vicuna, giant otter, Andean condor and military macaw, among others. The newly discovered monkey species lives in Madidi and nowhere else.

5) La Paz Stopover

La Paz

Pedro de la Gasca, to whom the Spanish king had entrusted rule over the former Inca lands, commanded Captain Alonso de Mendoza to found a new city commemorating the end of the civil wars in Peru. The city of La Paz was founded on October 20th, 1548 under the name of La Ciudad de Nuestra Senora de La Paz (The City of Our Lady of Peace). The city was first established in what today is Laja, on the Tiahuanaco road. Shortly after its founding, La Paz was moved to its present location, in the valley of the Chuquiago Marka.

In 1549, Juan Gutierrez Paniagua was commanded to design an urban plan that would designate sites for public areas, plazas, official buildings. La Plaza de los Espanoles, what today constitutes the Plaza Murillo, was chosen as the location for government buildings as well as the cathedral.

Today La Paz is a vibrant city, growing and expanding in all directions. La Paz has a population of more than a million inhabitants. La Paz is the official government site.
