1) Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River aboard the Desafio

Manaus is the capital of Brazil's massive Amazonas state, and was founded in 1669. During the past century's rubber boom Manaus became one of the world's most prosperous cities, and the opulence of those days may still be appreciated viewing the city's magnificent Teatro Amazonas Opera House.

After competition slowed the rubber industry, the city fell into decline. Today, however, Manaus is thriving once again as the Upper Amazon's transportation hub and distribution center.

For visitors, daily river cruises and boat transfers depart to jungle lodges situated one to five hours from the city. Once in the jungle, activities include jungle hikes, night outings, piranha fishing, camping, boat tours, and wildlife viewing.

3) Classic Brazil

Rio - Iguassu Falls - Manaus - Amazon Jungle

South America's giant, Brazil is a seductive country with dazzling beaches, tropical islands and picturesque colonial towns. Its verdant rainforest boast an astounding array of wildlife, while its wildly energetic cities are home to a multitude of ethnic groups.

Brazil's landscape is as diverse as the people who inhabit it. Few tourists venture far from Brazil's spectacular coastline (which spans 7400 km/4598 miles), but a trip into the interior reveals a different but equally captivating Brazil. As well as the world's biggest rainforest in the Amazon, Brazil boasts many wilderness areas including the wildlife-rich wetlands of the Pantanal, the canyons and caves of the Chapada Diamantina and the colourful old gold-mining towns in the mountains of Minas Gerais.

The population of Brazil is a melting pot of races, including indigenous people, descendants of slaves from Africa and the offspring of European immigrants. This variety is reflected in the food, architecture, music and culture of Brazil. It is this assortment of places, people and traditions that makes Brazil such an unforgettable place to visit.

4) Cultural Salvador

Salvador

"There are certain countries, the names of which fire the popular imagination. Brazil is one of them; an amalgam of primitive and sophisticated, jungle and elegance, beating drums and luscious jazz harmonics – there's no other place like it in the world. And while Rio, or its fame anyway, tends toward the elegant and sophisticated end of the spectrum, Bahia tends toward the other. Bahia is the land of the drum..."

Salvador, the first Capital of Brazil and considered the most Afro-American city of Brazil, is the Capital of the State of Bahia. Bathed in shimmering sunlight, where people walk like they are dancing and talk like they are singing, and the food sizzles in golden palm oil.

5) Iguassu Falls - Brazilian Side

Iguassu Falls Brazil Side

Deep in the heart of tropical South America, there remains a place that can still be called a Garden of Eden; one of the last remaining pieces of a pre-historic world. Located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, in the heart of two National Parks the place is still Sacred to the native Guarani Indians. There are no words to describe the feelings of those who come to this sacred land. Visitors can still hear the echoes of a distant past; the drums of the Guarani tribes venerating the natural beauty of this incredible place which they named Iguassu.

Iguassu Falls
Strung out along the rim of a crescent-shaped cliff about 2.5 miles long, some 275 individual cascades and waterfalls plummet up to 269 feet into the gorge below. The thunderous roaring can be heard from miles away.

As it falls and pounds the rocks, some of the water turns into a fine spray that rises in a cool plume over the falls area, dampening the miles of inconspicuous trails that line both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the falls. Birds and insects flitter around a very special ecosystem where Iguassu launches constant mist into the surrounding vegetation.
