Rio Carnaval
5 days
Rio - Corcovado - Samba Drome Parade - Rio
Sun drenched beaches, music, dance, bikini clad cariocas and a night life that refuses to quit - the allure of Rio has been attracting foreign visitors since the 16th century. As the birthplace of the bossa nova and samba, Rio moves to a musical beat and whether you are there for Carnaval or not, every night is a party. But for one dazzling week in February, you can have the ultimate, exciting taste of what Rio's world famous Carnaval is all about - its music, rhythm and costumes.
Carnaval is a four day event that changes dates every year. It begins forty days before the Catholic holiday, Lent. As it's a major draw of tourists, all of Rio's hotels have banded together to agree on a minimum 4 night hotel stay, straddling the Carnaval weekend. This trip works within the 4 night minimum, but we can easily extend your time in Rio before or after Carnaval.

- Departure Dates & Extras
Itinerary:
Day 1. Friday Feb 28th. Arrive Rio
Upon your arrival in Rio de Janeiro, you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure.
Day 2. Saturday Mar 1st. Exploring Rio
The energy around Rio will be contagious today, as the city hums with excitement. You will head out into town to discover some of Rio's most famous sites in a small group tour. Passing through Rio's eerily silent financial district, you will get a sense of the various neighborhoods, favelas and several pristine, albeit crowded beaches. To top it all off, journey up to meet Christ the Redeemer statue upon Corcovado, Rio's most famous landmark. With arms outstretched, there is no better person to welcome you to the Marvelous City. Lunch will be at a fantastic Brazilian barbeque restaurant, known as Churrasqueria's! After lunch, you'll be dropped back at your hotel to relax, swim, or explore at your own pace. BL
Day 3. Sunday Mar 2nd. Rio - Carnaval - Samba Drome - Rio
Most of today is at leisure, as the Sambadrome and parade do not "kick off" until late in the evening. Relax, enjoy and explore at your own pace. It is worth looking at an afternoon nap as you will certainly be out late tonight. You will be notified of a specific time, but today will also include a Samba Drum School Lesson, where you will be introduced to some simple drumming techniques and challenged to keep up with the rhythm of the school!
Tonight is the night! The Carnaval parade has 90, 000 spectators, tens of thousands of dancers and a spectacle that will make your jaw drop while your hips sway to the music. The energy and love devoted to this parade has to be seen to be believed. The 362 days of preparation are followed by three days of madness and it's all over. A specially built stadium called the Sambadrome provides the backdrop to an orgy of color and samba, where the various competing samba schools and parade-floats put on their best moves for the judges and for the road of the crowd. The Sambadrome is ground zero of the biggest party on earth! Due to the insanity after the parade, tonight includes a drop off transfer before the parade at the Sambadrome, but it's impossible to arrange reliable transport afterwards. Once you're ready to call it a night, consider the many taxis along side streets from the parade, but traffic will be intense, due to the extraordinary number of people out on the streets. B
Day 4. Monday, Mar 3rd. Rio
As you have just returned back to your hotel, today is completely at leisure to relax or perhaps sleep on either Copacabana, Ipanema beach or by your hotel pool. If you are feeling adventurous, the truth is a lot of businesses are closed today, but theres always action along the beaches and esplanades. B
Day 5. Tuesday, Mar 4th. Onward Travels
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. B
Notes: You will require a Visa for entry into Brazil.
The Sambadrome ticket and transfer includes an arrival transfer, but as the parade kicks off, it's impossible to include a return transfer due to crowds, etc. Typically our past travelers have not had any difficulty in getting back to their hotel.
