Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake and the jumping off point for trips and onwards journeys into Bolivia. A beautiful drive along the shores of the sacred lake leads to Copacabana - the border town in Bolivia.

From here there are options for a short trip onto the crystal clear waters of Lake Titicaca and the famous Islands of the Sun and Moon before heading off directly to La Paz or via the mystical ruins of Tiahuanaco.

Whatever choice you make - and we have 3 listed below - connecting Peru and Bolivia is easy and avoids international airfares. There is now no reason not expand your trip and add one more Andean country to your itinerary!

OPTION 1

Day 1. Puno to La Paz direct or v.v. (no stops other than the border)

You are collected from your hotel in Puno Paz and transferred to the border where you are assisted with border procedures. The road from Puno runs along the shores of Lake Titicaca offering amazing views of not only the lake but of the Andean mountains and the many local villages that dot the shore line.

OPTION 2

Day 1. Puno to La Paz or v.v. stopping at Tiahuanaco

You are collected from your hotel in Puno and transferred to the border where you are assisted with border procedures. The road from Puno runs along the shores of Lake Titicaca offering amazing views of not only the lake but of the Andean mountains and the many local villages that dot the shore line.

At this point you hop off your land transport, hop onto a small vessel while your bus / mini van crosses on a barge as old as the lake itself! On the other side you reunite with your bus / mini van and continue onto La Paz via Tiahuanaco.

Tiahuanaco, near the shores of Lake Titicaca, was the center of a powerful, self-sustaining empire in the southern Central Andes. The roots of the Tiahuanaco capital can be found in the early village underlying the 1.5-square-mile civic-ceremonial core. The city was settled by 400 B. C. on the Tiahuanaco River, which empties into Lake Titicaca to the north. The small farming village evolved into a regal city of multi-terraced platform pyramids, courts and urban areas, covering a total 2.31 square miles between AD 100 and 1000.

Tiahuanaco is recognized by Andean scholars as one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire, flourishing as the ritual and administrative capital of a major state power for approximately five hundred years.

On arrival into La Paz you will be dropped at your hotel. L

OPTION 3

Day 1. Puno to La Paz Connector Sun and Moon Islands

You are collected from your hotel in Puno and transferred to the border where you are assisted with border procedures. The road from Puno runs along the shores of Lake Titicaca offering amazing views of not only the lake but of the Andean mountains and the many local villages that dot the shore line.

On arrival into Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia you visit the Copacabana cathedral. One of the truly unique churches in Bolivia, the sprawling Copacabana Cathedral with its large round domes, commanding pillars, and mudéjar (Moorish) style design, is a dominating, whitewashed stone sanctuary, complete with a walled courtyard and chapels in each corner. Inside the cathedral are a long row of wooden pews, a ceiling painted in deep reds, blues and yellows, and the miraculous Virgin of Copacabana. The ornately-robed, Andrean-looking Virgin is held in a small chapel in the back of the sanctuary, where it is serves as revered icon for the community.

From here we take a Hydrofoil cruise to Moon Island, visiting the Sun Virgins Temple Iñak Uyu.

We then continue to the Sun Island where we visit the Inca Staircase & Sacred fountain and taste the sacred water believed to give eternal youth & happiness!

We have lunch at "Uma Kollu" archaeological restaurant and visit a picturesque handicraft market before re boarding the hydrofoil and heading to Huatajata the "Andean Roots Eco Village". Here we visit the Altiplano Museum, where a state of the art audio system will recount the cultural heritage of the Aymaras and the Incas, the Spanish conquest and the modern explorer Jacques Cousteau adventures on and under the lake.

We then visit a local village for a chance to purchase handicrafts and meet the Limachi family, builders of the RA II and Tigris - reed boats - for the adventurer Thor Heyerdhal's epic expedition across the Atlantic Ocean.

Back in Copacabana we continue our journey by road where reach the Taquini straights - the narrowest part of Lake Titicaca where we cross. At this point you hop off your land transport, hop onto a small vessel while your bus / mini van crosses on a barge as old as the lake itself!
