THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Electricity:
230 volts AC, 50Hz. Three-pin plugs are standard; if needed, adaptors can be purchased in Israel.
Visa & Entry Requirements:
At present Canadian and US nationals do not require a visa to enter Israel. As entry requirements change on a regular basis, please check with the local Embassy/Consulate or your travel agent for the most updated information. All nationalities entering Israel require a passport valid at least six months from the intended date of entering Israel. Anyone traveling to Israel as a tourist must travel with a round-trip ticket in their possession.
Note: Persons wishing to proceed to an Arab country other than Egypt or Jordan after visiting Israel should ensure their passport does not contain an Israeli visa or stamp.
Embassies:
Israeli Embassy, Washington DC, United States: (202) 364-5500.
Israeli Embassy, Ottawa, Canada: (613) 567-6450.
Health Requirements:
At present there is no known risk of malaria or Yellow Fever in Israel. The following vaccines may be recommended for your travel to the Middle East. Discuss your travel plans and personal health with a health-care provider to determine which vaccines you will need: Hepatitis A & B, rabies, typhoid, polio and tetanus.
Health: Israel has excellent medical facilities and tourists may go to all emergency departments and first-aid centers. However, any medical form of treatment can be expensive. Health centers are marked by the red Star of David on a white background. Medical insurance is recommended.
Climate:
Israel has a Mediterranean climate characterized by long, hot, dry summers and short, cool, rainy winters (as modified locally by altitude and latitude). January is the coldest month, with temperatures from 5C-10C, and August is the hottest month at 18C-38C. About 70 percent of the average rainfall in the country falls between November and March; June through August are often rainless. Rainfall is unevenly distributed, decreasing sharply as one moves southward. In the extreme south, rainfall averages less than 100 millimeters annually; in the north, average annual rainfall is 1,128 millimeters. During January and February, it may take the form of snow at the higher elevations of the central highlands, including Jerusalem.
