AGRA - TAJ MAHAL
1, 2 or 3 days
Agra, the home to the famed Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan to commemorate his undying love for his beautiful wife who died during child birth. This marbled monument is a highlight of most people’s visits to India. Our recommended duration for a journey to Agra would be 2 days but if you have limited time, it is possible to take an express train from Delhi early in the morning and return that same evening to catch your onward flight home. For architectural buffs, a visit of 3 days may be more suitable. With either the 2 day or 3 day programs, we recommend visits to both Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri as well.
Day 1. Arrive Agra.
Welcome to the home of India's most renowned monument. Transfer to your hotel.
Day 2. The Taj Mahal.
Spend time marvelling at the Taj Mahal, a monument to love built in 1630 by Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife.
The colours reflected by this marble building vary depending on the time of day. Spend time in the surrounding gardens inspired by the beauty of it all. Also, visit Agra Fort which was built by Akbar the Great. The walls around the fort measure over two kilometres. (B)
Day 3. Agra to your next destination.
Today, why not visit Fatehpur Sikri en route to your next destination. Built in the second half of the 16th century by Akbar the Great, this ghost city is located just 40 km outside of Agra. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site constructed out of red sandstone and bears an exceptional testimony to the Mughal civilization. (B)
