Things To Know Before You Visit Thailand
Rice paddy terraces
Passports
Each visitor is required to hold a valid passport for entering Thailand. Visas are not required for Canadian or US passport holders for stays of less than 30 days.
Vaccinations
Proof of vaccination is not required unless you come from an infected area.
Currency
The official Thai currency is baht and satang (1 baht = 100 satang). It can be freely exchanged with foreign currency in banks or hotels. Thai money circulates in 1, 5, 10 satang coins and 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 baht notes.
Departure Tax
700 Baht International, 100 Baht Domestic except Samui 400 Baht (departure tax is included in the price of air ticket).
Language
Thai is the national language. English is widely spoken and understood in hotels and major shops.
Health
It is advisable to drink only bottled or distilled water, which is readily available everywhere.
Taxis
Only take taxis specifically marked "Meter Taxi", and ensure they turn the meter on. For the tuk-tuks, negotiate the fare before starting the journey. Most taxi drivers do not speak English, except hotel cabs. It is suggested that you have instructions written in Thai. Most hotels have cards with their address, for this purpose.
Telephones
Most hotels are equipped with International Direct Dialing service phones. It is easy to call most major cities in the world, but due to the extensive telephone modernization programme under way, telephone lines are sometimes heavily congested.
Electricity
Electricity supply is 220 volts, 50 cycles. Major hotels also have 110V or adapters.
Travellers Cheques
Travellers cheques can be cashed in banks or hotels, usually requiring a passport for identification purposes. Bangkok Airport's exchange rate is the same as downtown and is usually better than most hotels. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, major shops and restaurants in Bangkok and Pattaya.
Clothing
Thailand is a tropical country and as such, very hot. Comfortable cotton clothing is best and mostly casual attire is suitable for most tours and events. When visiting temples, though, shorts should not be worn and women are advised to dress modestly, with arms and legs covered.
Medical Facilities
Most major hotels will have a doctor on call. Western standard medical services are available in the major cities.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in Thailand. There is an automatic 10% service charge in hotels. In restaurants add 10% and slightly more in nightclubs. You do not need to tip taxi drivers.

The art of doll-making in Thailand dates back hundreds of years and remains very much alive today. Doll collectors will delight in a broad assortment of detailed and beautifully crafted figures of classical dancers in full costume, hilltribe people in their traditional colourful dress and rural folk.
