Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel at 08:00 hrs, then brief you during the hour-long drive south to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang. Here you will not only enjoy a marvelous opportunity to learn about the contemporary problems facing the great beasts in Thailand, but to connect with the giant pachyderms themselves.

Upon arrival, staff from the center will join you and your guide for a 10 minute briefing. This is a great time for Q & A. Then, as you walk to watch the elephants bathing you can consider the words of TECC's Foreign Relations Officer Richard Lair, who maintains: "although domesticated, these are still wild animals, and must be treated accordingly with a great deal of respect." Here you will be first be briefed on practical safety issues, so that you will be confident as you watch - up close- the mahouts bathing their elephants. Then check out the elephant show arranged for tourists; you will see demonstrations of traditional roles of logging in the forest, plus a few more modern pastimes such as elephant painting and music.

Exciting! Now you have a chance to ride through the jungle on one of the elephants (about 30-40 minutes, depending on local conditions, decided by your mahout). You may find that riding balancing on these gentle beasts is a little tougher than you originally thought!

Enjoy Lunch at the restaurant on the Center's grounds, then walk to one of the offices where you will have the opportunity to find out more about how your donation will help the Center. Before returning to Chiang Mai visit the Elephant hospital. Ask your guide for a summary of the hospital's work. Before leaving visit the Center's little shop, where you can purchase autographed paintings, elephants' dung paper products and other items of interest, the revenues of which all go to the elephants directly.
