Best Time to Visit
With its mild winters and warm, inviting summers, there’s never really a bad time to visit Australia, which is very much an outdoor country 365 days a year. Nonetheless, Australia’s a big place, with different seasons more conducive to travel than others, both weather- and activities-wise.
Sydney and Melbourne are arguably Australia’s best summer destinations, Australia’s summer running from December to February. At this time of year, the locals are relaxed, both cities are in the full swing of festival season, and some of their greatest cultural events (such as Chinese New Year celebrations in Sydney or the Australian Open in Melbourne) take place.
Summer is also the best time to visit the beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, the Great Barrier Reef and the rugged landscapes of Tasmania.
Of course, summer is also peak tourist season, so nature enthusiasts seeking both milder climates and quieter trails and coastlines should consider travelling in autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). These shoulder seasons are also less expensive throughout the country.
The most affordable time to visit is from June to August, during the country’s winter. It is also the perfect time weather-wise to visit Australia’s north, including Queensland, the Northern Territory and the northern parts of Western Australia.
Whatever your interests, keep in mind when making your plans that Australia’s location in the Southern Hemisphere means that its seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. What do the experts say?
Tasmania is under the radar for many travelers, but it’s great for hikes, natural landscapes and now modern art!
Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around
It might sound cliche, but you really can visit year-round. Australia is a big country, so there is always somewhere with amazing weather!
Goway’s trips to Australia are not stock itineraries. We can put together trips of a few weeks or a few months, allowing you to see as much of the land Downunder as you can. And we offer a mix of travel options, from self drives to train journeys to long stay
