Sunset at the famous Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia
New Zealand/Australia trip flawlessly executed.
The trip went amazingly smoothly. All flights, accommodations, transfers, and excursions were on time and as described. No surprises. First class all the way. We worked with Jessica Scott for almost six months planning this trip. She never failed to advise and work out all the details. In one of those instances where I thought I had a problem, but really didn't. I called the Goway 24-hour hot line. Got an instant response and they solved my non-issue, LOL Will definitely use Goway in the future.

Perfect bucket list vacation.
We just completed a trip to New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. Our destination specialist Erin was amazing. From day one, she listened to what we liked to do on our vacations and put together an absolutely amazing trip. We said many times throughout the trip how amazed we were at the tremendous amount of effort it took to make an effortless vacation for us. The flights were well timed, our days following long flights were well planned to give us a little rest. All of our excursions were fantastic. Our accommodations were nice and located within easy distance of all the local attractions. Pick up for transfers and excursions was very convenient and everyone was so nice and accommodating. Hats off to GoWay and Erin, they will be our go-to for international vacations from now on.

My agent was flexible and…
My agent was flexible and knowledgeable. As my plans evolved, she adapted reservations to suit. She listened to my requests; when location was my primary focus, location was superb. When comfort and luxury became more important, that's what was emphasized. All travel was seamless, despite the use of different modes and different providers.

Tip top knowledge, planning and performance
We have used Goway Travel for 2 trips this year after a recommendation from a colleague. Goway planned everything, and no request was too small for them. Service and response times to questions were fast and knowledgeable. Before departure, we were given a very detailed and comprehensive travel document that covered everything and more. On the trips, the planning was executed flawlessly. There was a billing error by a hotel in Australia which Goway had fixed same day on which we sent them an email. On each trip, we had different reps based on geographic expertise, and both were suburb, which leads us to believe that top drawer performance is the Goway culture.

Great New Zealand/Australia trip!
I wanted to extend our thank you to Goway and our travel specialist, Alice Teramoto, for a wonderful experience. Our New Zealand/Australia trip was very good and we enjoyed every aspect of it. The itinerary and travel documents are well laid out and everything was looked after for us. There were a number of excursions we probably wouldn't have tried and we are so glad it was arranged for us, we enjoyed it very much! Especially thought it was a relaxing treat to have private transfers to and from hotels or airports, great service. Our trip was everything we hoped for and more. Thank you for the travel service that Goway Travel provides!

Goway Travel came through for us in Australia
We had a wonderful eight week self-drive down the east coast of Australia thanks to Goway Travel. After our first week in Australia we realized it was taking too long to research accommodation and excursions so I contacted Goway for assistance. (We used Goway for a trip to New Zealand in the past). Alice put an itinerary together for us on very short notice. Even though she was in Canada and we were in Australia she responded quickly to any questions or concerns. Overall, we were very happy with our accommodations and excursions.

Travel Information about Australia

Get to know Australia before you go.

Best Time to Visit

With its mild winters and warm, inviting summers, there’s never really a bad time to visit Australia, which is very much an outdoor country 365 days a year. Nonetheless, Australia’s a big place, with different seasons more conducive to travel than others, both weather- and activities-wise.

Sydney and Melbourne are arguably Australia’s best summer destinations, Australia’s summer running from December to February. At this time of year, the locals are relaxed, both cities are in the full swing of festival season, and some of their greatest cultural events (such as Chinese New Year celebrations in Sydney or the Australian Open in Melbourne) take place.

Summer is also the best time to visit the beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, the Great Barrier Reef and the rugged landscapes of Tasmania.

Of course, summer is also peak tourist season, so nature enthusiasts seeking both milder climates and quieter trails and coastlines should consider travelling in autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). These shoulder seasons are also less expensive throughout the country.

The most affordable time to visit is from June to August, during the country’s winter. It is also the perfect time weather-wise to visit Australia’s north, including Queensland, the Northern Territory and the northern parts of Western Australia.

Whatever your interests, keep in mind when making your plans that Australia’s location in the Southern Hemisphere means that its seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. For more details, read our guide on the best times to visit Australia. And when you’re ready, contact our experts to plan your trip at the perfect time of year.

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around

Frequently Asked Questions

The official currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD). Typically, $1 USD is worth $1.50 AUD, but exchange rates are always fluctuating, so check the latest rates before travelling.

You can expect to spend about 150 AUD ($100 USD) per person per day while travelling in Australia, making the cost of a two-week Australian vacation about $2,100 AUD ($1,375 USD).

Driving across Australia from east to west (or vice versa) generally involves three to four days of continuous driving, based on a distance of roughly 3,400 to 4,000 kilometres (2,100 to 2,500 miles). A more relaxed trip from Sydney to Perth, however, could take a week or more.

Driving from north to south in Australia (or vice versa) would take approximately two to three days of non-stop driving, covering around 3,700 kilometres (2,300 miles). With rest stops, meals and sleep, a realistic driving time would be around five to seven days.

Australia's climate is wildly diverse, ranging from extremely arid in the interior to temperate in the southeast and tropical in the north. It experiences four distinct seasons across most of the country, with opposite seasons to the Northern Hemisphere, and a wet and dry season in the tropical north.

In Australia, snow falls primarily in the mountainous regions of the southeast, specifically in the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, as well as in the Australian Capital Territory. These areas include the Australian Alps (the Snowy Mountains and the Victorian Alps), Cradle Mountain and Mount Wellington in Tasmania, and the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.

Winter in Australia takes place from June to August, although you might see snow as early as May and as late as October in the coldest parts of the country. The snowfall rate at the highest altitudes varies from year to year. Australia’s main cities are almost always snow-free.

The majority of Australia's 27.4 million people are concentrated in the eastern coastal states of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, with a large portion residing in the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. On the western coast of Australia, the biggest metropolitan region is Perth and environs, which have a population of nearly 2.5 million people.

Australia offers a wealth of souvenir and gift options, from iconic items like UGG boots, Aboriginal art and opals to practical treats such as Vegemite, Lucas Papaw ointment or Australian snacks. Other popular options include boomerangs, didgeridoos, kangaroo leather products and Australian wines

People in Australia are very friendly to tourists and generally welcoming of newcomers. It’s a common practice to exchange smiles with people, even if you don’t know them.

Australia boasts a diverse range of attractions and landmarks. Among its most iconic sites are the Sydney Opera House, Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock), the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Other notable locations include Bondi Beach, the Great Ocean Road, Kakadu National Park and the Twelve Apostles.

All travelers (except New Zealand citizens) need a valid visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter Australia. For short tourist or business visits of less than 90 days, many nationalities can obtain an ETA through the Australian ETA app. Other visa types are available for longer stays or for specific purposes.

The best way to get around Australia depends on your specific travel priorities and the duration of your visit. If you’re covering long distances or on a short trip, flying is the quickest method of getting around the country, while car hires offer on-the-ground experiences, greater flexibility and access to remote areas. One of the most leisurely ways to see Australia’s interior is via a rail odyssey on one of the country’s legendary trains, such as the Ghan, the Indian Pacific, the Great Southern of the Spirit of Queensland. Public transport, including trains and buses, is a good option for certain routes and cities.
