If we are booking your accommodation in Darwin before your self-drive, we will arrange to have your car delivered to your hotel.
Day 1. Darwin to Kakadu. Approx 257 km (160 miles). Arrive Darwin and collect your rental vehicle. Make your way to Kakadu. Travel along the Arnhem Highway to Jabiru and Kakadu National Park. On your journey you may wish to visit the Window on the Wetlands Visitors Centre, enjoy a cruise on the Adelaide River Queen to witness the famous jumping crocodiles and visit Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve which is a paradise for waterbird-watchers on the Adelaide River flood plains. Overnight - Kakadu.
Day 2. Kakadu to Katherine. Approx 300 km (186 miles). An early start is recommended this morning. Continue on to the gold-mining town of Pine Creek and then on to Katherine. Hire a canoe on Katherine Gorge, listen into the world's largest classroom - School of the Air, visit Edith Falls and the mysterious Cutta Cutta Caves. Overnight - Katherine.
Day 3. Katherine to Tennant Creek. Approx 667 km (420 miles). Another big day of driving today so again a very early start is recommended. Mataranka is a welcome stop for all travellers as it boasts the biggest bathtub in the Territory - the soothing Mataranka Thermal Pool. Continue on for a stop at Daly Waters Pub, the oldest pub in the Northern Territory. Continue further south to the mining town of Tennant Creek. Overnight - Tennant Creek.
Day 4. Tennant Creek to Alice Springs. Approx 506 km (314 miles). Another early departure is recommended this morning for the long drive to Alice Springs. Along your way you will come to one of the Territory's most well-known landmarks - the extraordinary, balancing Devils Marbles. Travel through Barrow Creek, Ti Tree and Aileron before arriving for overnight in Alice Springs.
Day 5. Alice Springs. Day at leisure in Alice Springs. A visit to the School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service will show you two of the facilities necessary for everyday life in remote locations. Overnight - Alice Springs.
Day 6. Alice Springs to Ayers Rock. Approx 461 km (286 miles). The road to Australia's greatest tourist attraction, Uluru, is a smooth and easy drive. Located in Ulura-Kata Tjuta National Park, Ayers Rock is the symbol of Australia. Its important Aboriginal history means that the National Park is one of only two places in the world recognised as a World Heritage site because of its living cultural significance. It is jointly managed according to the rules of Anangu Law, the Tjukurpa. Overnight - Ayers Rock.
Day 7. Depart Ayers Rock. Drop off your rental vehicle and depart Ayers Rock.
