Abel Tasman National Park situated at the top of the South Island, offers spectacular ocean views, glittering beaches and turquoise water. The track is reasonably well graded making it suitable for most people and families and honeymooners. It is accessible all year round. The accommodation is first class, and food and wine excellent.

WALKING TOURS

Walking Tours

Day 1. Nelson to Awaroa. Walking time: approximately 4 hours. Pick up at your hotel in Nelson or Motueka. Coastline cruise from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui. Walk north from Totaranui to Anapai Bay - or further if you are energetic before heading south to the Meadowbank Homestead at Awaroa.

Day 2. Explore Awaroa. Relax or be active. Explore the tidal estuary by canoe or on foot. Visit various early European or pre-European sites. BLD

Day 3. Walk from Awaroa to Torrent Bay - Walking time: approximately 6-7 hours, 17 Km (10.5 miles). Highlights include a visit to abandoned granite quarry.

Today's walk takes you through native forests, past headlands, through estuaries, and onto soft sandy beaches. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Bark Bay with time for a swim or explore the lagoon and see the waterfalls. Then on to Torrent Bay Lodge where afternoon tea awaits your arrival.

Day 4. Explore Torrent Bay. Today's flexible schedule includes a choice of many beautiful short walks, including a guided walk inland among first generation forest to the spectacular Falls River waterfalls or, canoe around the Torrent Bay estuary. BLD

Day 5. Torrent Bay to Marahau - Walking time: approximately 4 hours, 13 Km (8 miles). The well graded track provides lovely views of the bays as you follow the coastline to Marahau where a coach awaits to return you to Nelson. BL

NOTE:

The direction of the Guided Walk may be reversed on some departures. Keep in mind that walking each day is optional. You are welcome to travel on any of our scheduled ferry services.

Please discuss this option with your guide prior to each day's departure. This flexibility is perfect for couples or groups that want to visit the park, some preferring to walk, others to take the boat between lodges.

BUSH AND BEACH WALK, 3 days

Day 1. Nelson to Torrent Bay. Walking time: approximately 4 hours 13 km (8 miles). Pick up at your hotel in Nelson or Motueka. Walking along the gentlest grade on the track, discover the pristine bays and headlands on route to Torrent Bay Lodge on the beachfront.

Day 2. Torrent Bay to Awaroa. Walking time: approximately 6-7 hours, 17 km (10.5 miles). Leave Torrent Bay to enjoy a morning walking through native forest with magnificent coastal views, and crossing the swing bridge at Falls River. Stop for lunch at Bark Bay or continue on to Onetahuti, taking time out to relax, explore, swim or sunbathe on the golden sands. Highlights include a visit to an abandoned granite quarry. From Onetahuti walk to Meadowbank Homestead.

Day 3. Awaroa to Nelson. Walking time: approximately 2 hours, 7 km (4 miles). Cross the Awaroa estuary and walk through the northern forests of the park with magnificent specimens of Nikau Palm and Rata. At Totaranui, join a cruise back along the coastline. You will by your coach and transferred back to Nelson or Motueka. BL

What To Bring

One of the advantages of our holidays is that we carry the bulk of your luggage by boat - You walk or kayak with only your lunch and personal requirements for the day.

We recommend you bring the following:

Day requirements

  • Sports sandals (Tevas) or sand shoes for estuary crossings
  • Swim wear and towel
  • Lunch (we supply)
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (very important)
  • Insect repellent
  • Handkerchiefs (please no tissues)
  • Change of clothing including a warm sweater or polar fleece. (even in summer) (NO DENIMS)
  • Water bottle (minimum 1 litre) (we supply 750 ml bottle with lunch)
  • Camera and film
  • Waterproof parka with hood (can be purchased from us for $3)
  • All medical supplies (you should not be separated from them)

DO NOT bring any expensive jewellery, watches etc.

Overnight requirements are transferred by boat.
We recommend the following go in your Lodge Luggage Bag.

  • Underwear 2 x sets
  • Two shirts or T-shirts
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • Warm and cool clothes for evening wear
  • Toilet and bathroom requirements
  • Thermal long underwear
  • All clothing will be put in waterproof plastic bags (which we will provide) for extra protection should it rain.
