Itinerary:
Day 1. Puno - Copacabana - Tiahuanaco Ruins - La Paz or v.v.
You will be collected from your hotel and begin the drive south along the shore of Lake Titicaca. As most people finish their travels in Puno few see the beautiful views of the lake bordered by the Andes in the background. Pass through small villages and the back roads before hitting the border with Bolivia.
After border formalities you will board a different bus in Bolivia and continue onto the lake shore town of Copacabana.
It might share the same name with the famous Brazilian city, but Copacabana Bolivia couldn't be more different. It has none of the glitz and glamour of Rio, but instead offers small town charm in a place where the locals are both welcoming and fiercely proud of their Indian heritage. A heritage said to be founded on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where Copacabana lies. Making it landlocked Bolivia's main beach resort.
The huge cathedral which dominates the town is certainly the highlight of Copacabana. Built around the 17th century it is considered one of the finest in all of Bolivia. Many vendors outside sell medallions of the Virgin Mary, as the chapel holds the famous statue of Virgen de Copacabana.
After a quick stop you move on by good road to the crossing point of Lake Titicaca. You then come to the Taquina strait - the narrowest part of lake Titicaca. Here your vehicle is driven onto a barge for the 2km crossing of the lake. You travel in a small motor boat.
Reunited on the other side you now head to the ruins of Tiahuanaco.
Located near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, the city of Tiwanaku (also spelled Tiahuanaco) was the capital of a powerful pre-Inca civilization that dominated the Andean region between 500 and 900 AD. The monumental remains of this great culture include several temples, a pyramid, symbolic gates, monoliths and mysterious carvings of alien-like faces. Arriving later, the Incas regarded Tiahuanaco as the site of creation by their god Viracoca, who rose from the depths of Lake Titicaca.
From here you head into La Paz where you will be dropped at your hotel of choice.
