Introducing Ecuador's Tren Crucero
Goway offers high altitude luxury, exploring Ecuador by rail.
Travellers tired of waiting for spring might want to consider Ecuador, the land of eternal spring for their next globetrotting adventure. The country becomes a particularly tempting option with the recently opened Tren Crucero, an exhilarating and picturesque train service connecting the coastal city of Guayaquil with the UNESCO-listed capital, Quito.
Ecuador tours have grown more popular in recent years as the country secures its reputation as a safe, beautiful and very affordable slice of Latin America that still sees relatively few tourists. While Galapagos tours remain a big part of Ecuador’s visitor share, Quito is the country’s rising star. In 2012, its tourist income boasted the fastest growth rate of any city in the world, with Bogota in neighbouring Colombia close behind.
The Tren Crucero offers amazing views over Ecuador’s many natural environments, immersing travellers in the real heart of the country. It also incorporates the famous Nariz del Diablo (the Devil’s Nose) route, on which the train follows a series of tight switchbacks to descend a height of over 500 yards within eight miles.
With a strict capacity of 54 passengers, the train features four fully restored ‘vintage’ carriages that retain the route’s historical design. This intimate journey feels miles away from typical tourist trails, even though the train has been refurbished to cater to the needs of visitors. In an unusual touch, passengers disembark to stay overnight at haciendas, for an authentic taste of everyday local life.
Over four days, Goway guests can experience Tren Crucero between Quito and Guayquil. Passengers travel through the volcanic Andes including Cotopaxi National Park, home to an incredible array of South American wildlife. They’ll also stop at several local villages and markets and traverse the famed Devil’s Nose stretch of track. Accommodation is at haciendas with meals included.
The trip can be taken in either direction, making it an easy addition for passengers visiting Ecuador for the Galapagos and wanting to see more of the mainland. Most Galapagos trips depart from Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city.
