GOWAY’S MARILYN CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

In these times when there is not much to celebrate in our industry, Goway Travel is this week celebrating the 30th anniversary of their General Manager, Western Canada, Marilyn Bryson.

When Marilyn joined the company in 1973 she represented 50% of the full time staff – along with Bruce Hodge the founder and president. “We operated out of a dinky, little downtown office… but it was on Yonge Street. In those days we specialized in adventure and overland tours all over the world” stated Bryson. “I started as Bruce’s assistant and even though I couldn’t type properly Bruce hired me because I had travelled overland through the Middle East, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.” “In order to grow we started operating minibus camping tours all over the Americas even South America, where for 8 years we ran our own buses (including Argentina during the Falklands War)” continued Bryson.

In order to prove to overseas operators that Goway could represent them across Canada, the company decided in 1981 to send Marilyn to Vancouver to open their western office. This was operated from the back area of a Travel CUTS office on the UBC Campus for the better part of a year before Goway could justify the full rent of their own office downtown. Bryson recalls “In the beginning days there were no faxes or email or computer reservation systems. Everything was done manually. Bookings were made by coded telegrams and then by telex. Agents could ‘call collect’ if they had new bookings. For inquiries they had to use their own dime. I started in the industry just before they brought in licensing.”

“I have seen so many changes in our industry but can’t imagine a more interesting way to have spent these 30 years. I have met so many fabulous people, some real characters, and visited many magical places around the globe. It has been, and continues to be, a great life!” boasted Bryson.

Goway now has offices in the US as well as Australia and New Zealand and a staff of 250, of which 49 report to Marilyn in Western Canada.
