Goway ‘Stay of Distinction’ hosts Michelle Obama

The Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town, a Goway ‘Stay of Distinction’, had the honour of hosting First Lady Michelle Obama during her first official visit to South Africa. Michelle Obama was accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, mother Marian Robinson, and her niece and nephew. At The Table Bay Hotel, Mrs. Obama stayed in the Table Mountain Suite with stunning views of Table Mountain. True to form, the First Lady was a gracious and warm guest, exuding a down-to-earth sophistication and elegance. During her two-day stay in Cape Town, the First Lady had a very full schedule, including meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and University of Cape Town students and touring the historic District Six Museum before leaving South Africa.

To qualify as a Goway Stay of Distinction, a property must not only be outstanding in every aspect, but must also have character, style, location and other contributing assets. Cape Town’s celebrated Table Bay Hotel fulfils all these criteria and has been the preferred hotel of choice for heads of state, dignitaries, royalty and celebrities since welcoming Nelson Mandela as their first guest in 1997. Barack Obama first stayed at The Table Bay Hotel as a Senator from Illinois, while Charlize Theron, Céline Dion, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Madeleine Albright, and Snoop Dogg have all called the award-winning Table Bay Hotel home while visiting Cape Town.

On the heels of Michelle Obama, Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou and Kimora Lee Simmons, fashion designer and reality TV star of “Life in the Fab Lane”, stayed at The Table Bay Hotel for the weeklong activities leading up to Nelson Mandela International Day on July 18 (Mandela’s birthday). On Nelson Mandela International Day, recognized by the United Nations, people are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time to a humanitarian activity, just as Mandela spent 67 years fighting for the betterment of South Africa.

The Table Bay Hotel, a Sun International property and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, is located on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and embodies all the tradition, grace and elegance befitting a five-star property while still maintaining its own unique nautical character.
