Cairns And The Great Barrier Reef

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the largest complex of coral reefs and islands in the world. Stretching for more than 1,200 km along Australia's Northeast coast, the reef is a UN World Heritage site, as breathtakingly beautiful as it is diverse.

Day 1. Arrive Cairns. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel as chosen below. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Tonight you may like to try the local seafood.

Day 2. Great Barrier Reef Cruise. Travel by Quicksilver's 30 metre luxury sailing catamaran to the Low Isles. Set like a jewel within a lagoon of secluded coral gardens, Low Isles offers everything you can dream of in a tropical paradise. Today enjoy a host of reef activities including snorkelling, introductory diving, exploring the island beach with a marine biologist, viewing the coral through a glass-bottom boat or just lazing on the beach. Includes smorgasbord lunch.

Day 3. Rainforest, Kuranda & Aboriginal Experience. Transfer to the Kuranda Scenic Train for a spectacular narrow gauge ride to charming Kuranda, famous for its markets. Travel into the towering rainforest on an amphibious army duck.

Enjoy an Aussie barbecue lunch and an authentic aboriginal cultural performance under the canopy of the rainforest. Experience a "Dreamtime" walk with an aboriginal guide. Throw a boomerang!

You will also see and touch Australian native animals including koalas and kangaroos. Return to Cairns on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Glide over the lush canopy and stop at the rainforest interpretive centre. Coach transfer back to your accommodation. L

Day 4. Tablelands, Waterfalls & Spanish Castles. Depart Cairns by coach and ascend the Gillies Range on the Gillies Highway. Arrive at beautiful Lake Barrine, an extinct volcanic crater, for Devonshire tea at its famous Teahouse. Take an optional Wildlife Cruise or enjoy a swim. Continue to the Malanda Environmental Park in mountainous rainforest by the North Johnson River, 2500 feet above sea level.

Learn about the forest flora and fauna with the chance to see kangaroos and tortoises before driving on to visit the giant Curtain Fig Tree. Stop for a two-course hot lunch at the Roundyard Stockman's Restaurant, built in the form of a cattle roundyard from local timbers. It is packed with memorabilia and historic photographs of the area. After lunch we visit the famous Millaa Millaa Falls which have featured in the movies and television commercials.

Continue down the Platypus Highway to Paronella Park for a private guided tour of the Spanish Castle ruins and historic gardens. One man's vision, eventually ruined by raging floods, Paronella Park has an amazing history. On the return journey to Cairns we visit The Boulders near Babinda which are shrouded in Aboriginal legend.

Day 5. Depart Cairns. Today is at leisure until you are transferred to the airport for your onward flight. Stay longer if you wish.

ALICE SPRINGS & AYERS ROCK

Uluru (Ayers Rock): Located 450 km SW of Alice Springs is one of the world's greatest monoliths, some 3 km long and rising 348m above the surrounding plains. Located within Uluru National Park, Ayers Rock is noted for its spectacular colour changes at sunset and sunrise, and is sacred to the Aboriginal people.

Day 1. Arrive Alice Springs. The famous "Town like Alice", where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure*. Tonight "take a camel to dinner".

*Optional Afternoon Tour idea:
This afternoon join a tour of Alice Springs town. Sights visited include the Royal Flying Doctor Base, School of the Air and the historic Telegraph Station. Also visit the Art Museum to also observe Aboriginal artefacts. Enjoy the views of Alice from Anzac Hill.
Tour Departs daily at 2PM.

Day 2. Alice Springs to Ayers Rock & Olgas. Off early by coach and travel through changing scenery from the MacDonnell Ranges, over the Finke River into the semi-arid desert country that surrounds Ayers Rock and the Olgas. After visiting the Olgas, see the setting sun light up "The Rock", the world's largest monolith.

Day 3. Ayers Rock. Rise early to view the sunrise and enjoy breakfast in the Cultural Center before your Aboriginal guide takes you on a walk through bushland near the base of Uluru. See how traditional tools, weapons and implements are made and used in daily life, and practice throwing a spear. Tonight the Sounds of Silence Dinner, dining in the desert - a unique experience not to be missed. Transfer 7 km from the resort to your dinner site in the red sand dunes of the desert. Watch a brilliant outback sunset over the Olgas with a haunting sounds of the didgeridoo, the finest outback cuisine with pre-dinner drinks, canapés and a barbecue buffet meal; The verses of Banjo Patterson and star gazing round off a memorable evening. Day 3. Kings Canyon. Drive through the sand-hill country via Curtin Springs and Angas Downs Cattle Stations on the way to Kings Canyon. The huge sandstone walls rise up over 300m. Make the rocky climb to the rim of the canyon for marvellous views or alternatively explore the boulder strewn canyon floor. Rim walk may take up to 3 hours so it is not for the faint hearted or unfit. Supportive footwear is essential. Visit Kings Canyon Resort where lunch may be purchased at own expense.

Day 4. Ayers Rock to you next stop. All morning is spent visiting the area, with time to climb "The Rock" if you wish. You'll hear some of the Aboriginal mythology and legends that surround this area. There is also time to visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Center. After your tour, transfer to the airport for you onward flight.

FLINDERS RANGES 4WD DISCOVERY

Day 1. Adelaide to Wilpena Pound. Leave Adelaide and travel north to the wine districts of the Clare Valley. From here we continue inland and head towards the Flinders Ranges; a region that offers spectacular scenery. We continue on to Wilpena Pound, through passes and gorges and over hills and ridges. Scenic flights available at additional cost.

Day 2. Wilpena Pound. This region was once a seabed and now carries some important 600 million year old fossils. The Flinders Ranges are home to a vast number of native animals and birds. You'll also see the vibrant colours of the rock faces, which change through the day with the passing of the sun. The day is spent exploring the different terrain of the ranges. BL

Day 3. Wilpena Pound to Adelaide. Travel through the historic townships of the Flinders Ranges on the way back to Adelaide. B

SHIPWRECK COAST EXPLORER

One of the world's most scenic drives is the Great Ocean Road, a breathtaking stretch of astonishing seascapes, landscapes and seaside towns. Journey highlights include spectacular surf beaches and popular resorts such as Lorne, a sophisticated town filled with fine restaurants, cafes and accommodation. West of Lorne lies Apollo Bay, a quiet fishing village and the gateway to the rainforest of Otway National Park.

Beyond brood the colossal natural sculptures of the southern coast, and during winter, the southern right whales at Warrnambool. Go back in time as you visit the whitewashed cottages of seafaring Port Fairy and walk its riverside dock.

Shipwreck Coast

Day 1. Melbourne to Apollo Bay. Approx 185 km (115 miles), 2.5 hours. Arrive in Melbourne and collect your rental vehicle. Make your way to Apollo Bay through Geelong and on to Torquay. This is where the Great Ocean Road begins its journey westward. Continue on to Apollo Bay with its wide crescent shaped sandy beach, rolling green Otway hills and laid back lifestyle. While farming and fishing are central to the local economy, Apollo Bay is continuing to build its reputation as a holiday village.

Day 2. Apollo Bay to Port Fairy. Approx 190 km (118 miles), 2.5 hours. Depart Apollo Bay and continue along the Great Ocean Road that travels through the Otway National Park. The Great Ocean Road leaves the Otways at Princetown and hugs the rugged coast through to the Port Campbell National Park. B

Day 3. Port Fairy to Cavendish. Approx 185 km (115 miles), 2.5 hours. There is much to see on the journey between Port Fairy and Cavendish. The big attraction of this area is the Grampians National Park. You'll discover stunning views, hidden valleys, waterfalls, rock outcrops and Aboriginal culture. History and the lure of gold are the secrets to discover at Stawell, the home of the Stawell Gift, the richest footrace in the world. Some of Australia's leading wine makers, including Great Western and Seppelts, can also be found in the Grampians region.

Day 4. Cavendish to Ballarat. Approx 180 km (112 miles), 2 hours. This morning follow the highway all the way to the gold mining town of Ballarat. The area around present-day Ballarat was first settled in 1838. Ballarat's major attraction is Sovereign Hill, a fascinating re-creation of a gold-mining township of the 1860s. Tonight enjoy a pre-show buffet stye meal before seeing the "Blood on the Southern Cross", the spectacular sound-and-light-show which recreates the Eureka Rebellion. BD

Day 5. Ballarat to Melbourne. Approx 115 km (72 miles), 1.5 hours. As Melbourne is only a short drive away, you may like to take your time to further explore the Ballarat region. Travel southeast to Melbourne. Upon arrival in Melbourne drop off your rental vehicle. Depart Melbourne.

Upon arrival into Ayers Rock you will be met and transferred to Longitude 131°. Over the course of the next few days take advantage of the tours that are available to you. The history of the area is discussed in two morning and two afternoon fully-guided tours. Tours are not regimented or strictly set - they take advantage of the moment.

The Botanical Walk is through desert landscapes, dune country, spinifex country, mulga woodlands and desert oak communities. Guests see at first-hand native habitats, flora and fauna, bush food and medicine while smelling, touching and tasting their surroundings.

Sunset tours are an afternoon in the World Heritage Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, learning about worldwide cultural relationships with spirituality, life, land and the relationship to modern life. You then visit the Cultural Centre where Aboriginal people express their law and traditions through story, art, craft, song and interpretive displays. Return to the Dune House to enjoy the desert sunset and spectacular southern night skies while enjoying drinks and canapes.

Gorge Dramatic Sunset tours take place in a quiet gorge at the base of the enormous monolith. There you experience a dramatic view of sunset from "within" Uluru. During sunset everything changes dramatically. The size and scale of the formation is best gauged from close-up.

Cave Hill tours travel 2.5 hours from Ayers Rock Resort in a luxury four-wheel drive, travelling through the Central Australian desert and crossing into South Australia. On Day 3 you will be transferred to the airport to connect with your onward arrangements. Stay longer if you wish.
