Social Conventions

There are a variety of tribes in Botswana who follow their own traditional ways of life and as such, visitors should be sensitive to this and show respect. It is important to remember that outside of urban areas, many people are not used to visitors. Permission should always be asked before taking photographs of the local population while areas such as airports, official residences and defence establishments should not be photographed. Life in urban areas is not unlike daily life in North America.

Language

English is the official language of Botswana and is taught in schools. It is spoken in the majority of urban centres and even in some rural areas where the younger generations have been taught it in school. The national language is Setswana while some minorities speak Kalanga and Sekgalagadi.

Religion

The main religion in Botswana is Christianity with various denominations including Zion Christians, Anglicans, Methodists, United Congregational, Lutheran, Catholics, Mormons, Seventh-Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Baptists members.

Many tribes in Botswana also practice Badimo which is based on ancestral beliefs and practices. There is a small Islam population, however, it is mostly made up of immigrant communities.
