Social Conventions
Shaking hands is the most common greeting in Oman. When invited to dine with Omani people, it is polite to accept refreshments when offered and it is advisable to use the right hand when eating and drinking. (The left hand is regarded as unclean). One should avoid showing the soles of their feet or shoes as this may cause offence. Shorts should never be worn in public and beachwear should only be worn at the beach or at the pool. Tight-fitting clothing should be avoided.
During Ramadan, it is advisable not to eat, drink or smoke in public places during daylight hours. Finally, “no photography” signs exist in certain areas and should be respected.
Language
The official language of Oman is Arabic with English and Asian languages such as Hindi, Urdu and Baluchi being widely spoken. As a result of the East African presence that once existed in Oman, Swahili is spoken by some.
Religion
Oman is a predominantly Muslim country including Shi’ite, Sunni and Ibadi strands of Islam. Ibadi Islam is practiced by 60% of the population making Oman the only country in the world with an Ibadi majority. A further 16% of the population is Hindu with the remaining population following minority religions.
