Oman Geography and Maps

  • Old Map of Oman Circa 1949
  • Oman Tours & Vacations

Oman is located on the Tropic of Cancer in the extreme southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. The country shares borders with the Republic of Yemen to the southwest, Saudi Arabia to the west and the United Arab Emirates to the north. Small islands in the Gulf of Oman, the Strait of Hermuz and the Arabian Sea including those known as ‘Salamah and her Daughters’, Masirah and the Hallaniyat Islands also belong to Oman.

Valleys and deserts account for approximately 82% of the total land mass of Oman while a further 15% is mountain ranges and 3% makes up the coastal plain. The Gulf of Oman desert runs south along the coast to the desert island of Masirah. The interior plains are young sedimentary rocks with salt flats and sand dunes.

The Al Hajar Mountains form two ranges that extend from the northwest of the country toward the southeast. The two ranges are the Al Hajar al Gharbi Mountains and the Al Hajar ash Sharqi Mountains. Jabal Shams is the highest peak in Oman and it reaches an altitude of 3,000m (9,842.5 ft). The ranges are divided by the Wadi Samail, a valley that forms a route between Muscat and the interior. To the south of Oman are the mountains of Dhofar which turn green with the summer monsoon season.

The coastline of Oman stretches for over 1,700km (1,056 mi) from the Arabian Sea and the entrance of the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Oman and Musandam in the north. Although many think that Oman is merely a desert country, in reality, it hosts a mixture of habitats including mangrove swamps, mudflats and lagoons on the coast, savannas and salt flats and vast mountain ranges.
