Zimbabwe Geography and Maps

  • Zimbabwe on the map

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Mozambique to the northeast, South Africa to the south and Botswana to the southwest. As of 2011, Zimbabwe’s population was 12,754,378. The plateaus of Zimbabwe can be divided into three areas, the Lowveld, the Middleveld and the Highveld (the term veld refers to wide open rural spaces).

The Highveld region runs northeast to southeast. The central Highveld varies in topography from relatively smooth to rough and mountainous terrain. The Highveld occupies approximately one-quarter of Zimbabwe and includes the Eastern Highlands which are the highest in the country. Mount Nyangani is the tallest mountain in Zimbabwe, standing at 2,592 m (8,503.97 ft). There is another group of mountains found in Zimbabwe known as the Umvukwe Range located to the north. The Highveld slopes downward from the central upland area into the Middleveld.

The Middleveld is a plateau that ranges from 900-1,200 m (2,952.76-3,937 ft) in height. This region occupies space on both sides of the Highveld and is characterized by areas of wooded savannah and bracken-covered hills. The Middleveld gives way to the Lowveld located in the southern part of Zimbabwe near the borders.

The Lowveld is a plateau with an altitude of below 600 m (2,000 ft). This region is hotter and drier than the rest of the country and is characterized by grassy plains. The Lowveld covers nearly one-fifth of Zimbabwe’s territory. To the northwest and the north, the area is divided into three sections that each slope into the Zambezi River or to the shoreline of Lake Kariba.
