Social Conventions

People in India are very conscious of social order and their status in society. Religion, education and social class all influence greetings in India. The traditional Hindu greeting is to fold hands, and palms together and tilt the head. Shaking hands is rare, but if it does happen, males may shake other males' hands and females may shake other females' hands but people never shake hands with the opposite sex.

Visitors should remember to dress modestly and their shoulders and legs are to be covered. Shoes should always be taken off before entering a house.

Food restrictions based on religion are prevalent in India: Hindus and Sikhs do not eat beef and Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. Lamb, chicken and fish are the most common dishes as they avoid meat restrictions. When eating in India, always eat with the right hand.

Religion

India is considered the birthplace of four of the world’s major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Today, 80% of the population belongs to the Hindu tradition and 13% belong to the Muslim tradition. Sikhs, Christians, Parsi and Buddhists also have followings.

Language

There are 325 languages found in India, however, Hindi is spoken by the largest amount of people and is the official language of the government. English is used in business and is also used as a medium of higher education.
