Laos Weather
The monsoonal influence in Laos results in three main seasons: a dry season, a hot dry season and a wet season.
The dry season runs from November to February and temperatures are relatively low. This is generally the favoured time for tourists to visit as there is little rain.
The hot dry season runs from March to May. April is usually the hottest month of the year in Laos with temperatures reaching in mid-30˚C (80˚F) and higher. This season can also be very smoky as it is the time of year that farmers set fire to rice stubble to prepare for the new rice crop.
The wet season runs from May to October and days are characterized by downpours for a few hours rather than full days of rain. Temperatures average around 25˚C (77˚F) in the highlands and valleys and around 29˚C (84˚F) in the lowlands. Generally, the higher up people travel, the more rain they will come across.
If travelling in the northern region, a jacket may be required in the mornings, however, the days tend to be mild. The mountainous regions of Laos can experience temperature drops throughout the year so warm clothing is recommended if visiting the Xieng Khuong Province or other highland areas.
