Social Conventions
When meeting people in Taiwan, it is standard to greet the eldest person first, and handshaking is the most common greeting used. The people of Taiwan are very friendly and hospitable, although they tend to prefer to entertain outside of their homes. However, if one is invited to a Taiwanese house, shoes must be removed before entering. Also, when visiting for dinner, it is customary to bring a small gift ie chocolate, fruit or pastries. Gifts should be presented with both hands and should also be received with both hands.
Language
The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese, however, the native Taiwanese language, taiyu or minhan hua is still spoken by the dominant ethnic groups in the country and is considered the first language for many.
Religion
Various religious beliefs are upheld in Taiwan and there are thirteen registered religions in the country. Buddhism is the most popular with 35% of the population following it. Taoism is the second most popular and is followed by 33% of the population. Christianity is also on the rise while religions like Hsuan-yuan Chiao, Islam, Li-ism, Tenrikyo, Baha’i, Tienti Teachings, Tien Te Chiao, I-kuan Tao and Mahkarikyo have followers.
