Fiji Geography and Maps
Fiji consists of a group of volcanic islands in the South Pacific. The islands lie 4,450 km southwest of Honolulu and 1,770 km north of New Zealand. With a total of 322 islands and 522 smaller islets (only 106 are properly inhabited), Fiji is just a bit smaller than both New Jersey and Wales.
Most of the islands in Fiji were formed by volcanic events beginning nearly 150 million years ago. The two largest islands are Viti Levu (composed of 57% of the nation’s land area) and Vanua Levu (30% of the total land area). Viti Levu is made up of highlands and mountain ranges and Fiji’s highest peak, Mt. Tomanivi (1,300 m) is located here. Vanua Levu also has mountain ranges but beautiful rainforests, rivers, waterfalls and lagoons can be found there too. 80% of the population of this island nation call the two main islands home.
Fiji is in a unique position because the 180th-degree meridian runs right through the country, however, the International Date Line runs to the east of the archipelago and so all the islands have the same date. Due to its position, Fiji is always one of the first countries to experience a new calendar day.
