Brushed by the cool trade winds of the South Pacific and in the very heart of Polynesia, lies the Samoan Archipelago. Samoa as opposed to America Samoa consists of 10 individual islands. The islands of history, myth and legends, and home to Samoans for thousands of years are islands of extraordinary beauty; where turquoise lagoons lap onto unspoiled white sand beaches lined with coconut palms, where cascading waterfalls, rich green rainforests, and mist-enshrouded mountain peaks are all contained within a sparkling necklace of reefs.

Although Savaii is the largest island of the Samoan archipelago, the capital Apia is on the more populated island of Upolu, which is also the seat of government and centre of commerce. It consists of a beautiful coastline, lush interior, sprawling plantations, extinct volcanic craters, and towering mountain peaks.

One of the highlights in Apia is the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum with its many artifacts collected over time as this Scottish writer used to live here for some time. Also, your Samoa vacation package needs to include a visit to one of the many markets selling fruit and vegetables as well as hand-crafted carvings. With this type of infrastructure, although the main attractions are the white sand beaches ideal for watersports such as diving and snorkelling, the interior is a good place to explore by walking or cycling through picturesque villages.

Savaii is considerably less developed than Upolu, dotted with secluded beaches and crowned in the centre by the 609 ft Mt Matavanu, whose eruptions in 1905 caused the people to migrate to neighbouring Upolu.

Samoans are the largest group of full-blooded Polynesians in the world and have retained much of their ancient tradition and culture. Traditional tattooing is an intricate ancient art of Samoa and young Samoan males are tattooed with complex symbolic designs, from the lower chest to the knees. Samoan (Polynesian) is the native language, however, English is widely spoken and is the official language.

Samoa is a great stopover en route to Australia and New Zealand, travelling around the Pacific or around the World. It is also a fabulous one-stop vacation destination. To sum up, Samoa has excellent beaches, great watersport facilities and exotic scenery to satisfy most hedonists.
