Mexico offers a variety of reasons to consider visiting the country including the many excellent beach resorts, outstanding archeological sites, colourful Colonial cities, sophisticated metropolises and the natural beauty in its varied terrain.
Mexico is actually the 14th largest country in the area in the world, with a long coastline and ethnically made up of a mixture of Spanish and Indigenous peoples.
Both pleasure and culture can easily be combined. For resorts, one is spoiled for choice. The Pacific Ocean Coast offers an array of excellent and attractive resorts such as Acapulco, a sophisticated and urban destination with good nightlife and the remarkable high cliff sea divers, the smaller resorts of Mazatlan and Manzanillo and the resorts of the Baja Peninsula with its dramatic sea and landscapes, remote deserts and dormant volcanoes including the popular Cabo San Lucas.
The Atlantic Coast in the Yucatan Peninsula offers a number of excellent resorts such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen plus the ability to take in archaeological sites. The resort of Cozumel offers clear blue waters with wonderful coral reefs perfect for scuba diving or snorkeling. The Mayan civilization is a major attraction. Consider any of the following Mayan sites. There is Chichen Itza, the largest and best-restored site. Uxmal, near Merida, a well-preserved extensive site and Tulum on the coast. The city of Merida is the capital of the Yucatan and an attractive Colonial and historical centre. It is also a good point from which to visit Uxmal.
The capital, Mexico City is a city with a multitude of attractions. The historic centre is the majestic Zocalo, the largest square in Latin America and the third largest in the world. Nearby is the Aztec Temple Mayor site. The city has one of the largest parks in the world, the beautiful Chapultepec Park which houses several museums and art galleries including the renowned National Museum of Anthropology with its exceptional collection. In the near-lying suburbs are atmospheric San Angel with its cobblestone streets, upscale restaurants and boutiques, Coyoacan, an arts district and previously home to artists, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera plus Leon Trotsky and Xochimilco are known as the Mexican Venice with its network of canals. Just outside Mexico City is the Teotihuacan Mayan archaeological site with its Pyramid of the Sun and Taxco, a very pretty town known for its silverware and jewellery.
San Miguel de Allende is probably the most attractive Colonial city in the country situated north of Mexico on the “Colonial Route". The narrow cobblestone streets, leafy courtyards and well-preserved 17th and 18th Century buildings make this a pleasant city to spend time in.
Puebla, southeast of Mexico City is another Colonial city. It is surrounded by volcanoes and snow-capped mountains and is known for its pottery and colourful ceramic tiles.
Guadalajara is a graceful city with a Colonial downtown. It is the home of Mariachi music and Tequila.
Oaxaca in the southern part of Mexico is a charming city full of culture with a rich and colourful history. Check out the indigenous market and the ruins of Monte Alban, a pre-Columbian archaeological site.
A total contrast is the train journey through the wild and exotic Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Mountains (an extension of the Rocky Mountains in the US).
