The shape of Italy is famous for resembling a boot that extends into the central Mediterranean Sea. The peninsula shares land borders with Switzerland, France, Austria, and Slovenia. Within Italy’s borders are two independent states: San Marino and Vatican City. Including its islands, Italy has a coastline of 7,600 km (4,722.42 mi). The sea on three sides surrounds it: The Ligurian Sea in the northwest, the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west and southwest, the Ionian Sea to the south and southeast, and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italy is home to the two largest islands in the Mediterranean, Sicily, and Sardinia.

Mountain ranges rise over 700 m (2296.59 ft), covering approximately one-third of Italy. The most famous ranges include the Alps, the Dolomites, and the Apennines. In the western Alps, you’ll find Italy's highest peak, Mount Viso 3,841 m (12,601.71 ft) which extends into France, and Gran Paradiso 4,061 m (13,323.49 ft), which is the highest mountain fully in Italy. The eastern Alps include the Dolomite range and Mount Marmolada at 3,343 m (10,967.85 ft). The Apennines run the full length of the peninsula and are home to Gran Sasso d’Italia – the Great Rock of Italy at 2,912 m (9,553.80 ft).

Lakes are another significant element of Italian geography. In total, there are some 1,500 lakes in the country. The largest and most important lakes include Lakes Garda, Maggiore, Como, Seo and Lugano.
