Chile Geography and Maps
Chile is a long, narrow country in South America that is bordered by Peru in the north, Bolivia and Argentina to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. There are also a number of islands off the coast that Chile has claimed sovereignty over including the Juan Fernández Islands and the remote Easter Island.
Northern Chile is characterized by the Atacama Desert which is considered the driest desert in the world. Covering 105,000 square kilometres (41,000 square miles), Atacama is made up mostly of salt lakes and sand. One of the most dominant features of Chile’s geography is its mountain ranges. The Andes and a coastal highland range run parallel from each other from north to south. In between the two ranges is a fertile valley which breaks into archipelagos and channels to the south of the country. It is interesting to note that approximately 80% of Chile’s land is made up of mountains.
The central part of Chile is mainly used for agricultural purposes while the southern portion of the country is characterized by lakes, forests and snow-capped volcanoes. Patagonia is a region at the southern end of the South American continent that is shared by Argentina and Chile. It encompasses parts of the Andes mountain range, the Atlantic Ocean, the Tierra del Fuego peninsula and more.
