Food

Chilean cuisine generally reflects a combination of Spanish and local influences. The most common ingredients found in Chilean cuisine are meat, rice, potatoes, squash, garlic, onions and tomatoes. Cilantro and parsley are often used and bread is a major staple.  The most common bread found in the country includes hallullas, dobladitas and marraquetas or French bread. In Patagonia, the population tends to cook more non-traditional meat like boar and ostrich as well as spider crabs and lamb. Chile’s long coastline ensures that a wide variety of fresh seafood is always available.

Popular dishes include:

Pino empanadas: This dish consists of a savoury pie with meat, onions, eggs, raisins and olives as the filling.

Chiloé curanto: This dish is very unique and is made up of several layers of beef, pork, chicken and seafood. Once arranged, chiloé curanto is cooked over hot rocks in a hole in the ground and is covered by local nalca leaves.

Porotos con Riendas: This is a simple but tasty dish made from beans and noodles.

Cazuela: This soup is made with beef or chicken and is flavoured with a variety of vegetables including squash, potatoes, corn, green beans and then rice.

Crudos: This dish is an example of German-Chilean cuisine and consists of finely chopped raw beef mince that is put onto white bread, served with lemon juice, chopped onions and a yoghurt and mayonnaise sauce.

Chilean wine is known internationally for its quality and taste and often people come to the country to explore the many wine routes that include Aconcagua, Casablanca, San Antonio and more.
