Botswana Safari, Tours & Vacations

  • Sunrise over the Okavango Delta, Botswana
  • Zebras at the water holes
  • Spectacular sunset with baobab and giraffe on african savannah
  • Acacia trees set against blue sky
  • Elephants walking out of the river Chobe

Botswana became an independent nation in 1966 after being under British administration. Today, it is, without doubt an animal viewer’s paradise. 38% of the land is devoted to national parks and wildlife reserves in contrast to the Kalahari Desert which forms a large part of the country.

The type of landscape here is different from many other destinations offering game viewing. This is mainly due to the amount of water which covers the land especially in the wet season when the principal rivers flood their banks.

For example, the Okavango River bursts its banks and an extremely large amount of water flows into the scorched desert instead of into the sea. The web of channels created by this odd quirk of nature never stays the same because no two floods are ever the same.

In Botswana, animals, for the most part, are allowed to roam freely. The Okavango Delta is the world’s second largest game reserve and is made up of wetlands and drylands. Its unique ecosystem consists of channels, lagoons, ox-bow lakes and flooded grasslands plus many palm-fringed islands. This attracts 122 species of animals, 79 species of fish, 400 species of birds, 64 species of reptiles plus 1300 species of plants grow here.

Chobe National Park, with the beautiful Chobe River winding through it, is made up of flood plains, swamps and woodlands. It is a good place to see 4 of the Big 5 (no Rhino) as well as other wildlife. It is famous for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo and it is not uncommon to see hundreds of elephants at a time. An excellent way to go on a Botswana safari is by boat which will allow you to get up close and personal with hippos and crocodiles.

More game viewing is available at the very beautiful Moremi Reserve which was voted best African game reserve in 2008. It is of extreme importance in connection with conservation science.
