Our Petra Tours 

Petra is a famous historical and archaeological city that lies on the slope of Mount Hor in southern Jordan. Named a World Heritage Site in 1985, UNESCO described Petra as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage”. Suffice it to say, it’s not to be missed on a Jordan vacation.

Petra Vacation Highlights

Archaeological evidence suggests that Petra was inhabited from as early as 7000-6500 BC, however, it is believed that the city was established by the Nabataeans around 312 BC. It is because of the Nabataeans that Petra has become world famous for its incredible architecture that was carved into the walls of a hidden desert canyon. It remained unknown to the Western world until 1912 when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered it.

Today Petra is renowned for its ancient cultural heritage that continues to attract visitors on trips to Jordan. This legendary lost city has provided the backdrop for films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and has been part of the Transformers franchise in recent years. An excellent walking destination, the only transportation available in Petra is by camel, donkey or horse. Visitors on a Jordan vacation will be amazed by the magnificent Siq, the main road that leads to the Treasury which was originally built as a mausoleum and crypt beginning in the first century AD. The Royal Tombs and Roman Theatre should not be missed as tourists explore this incredibly unique display of ancient architecture and civilisation.
