  • Hong Kongs spectacular skyline
  • A bronze Buddha statue at Po Lin Monastery on Lan Tau Island
  • Hong Kong city skyline at night
  • Junk boat with tourists on Victoria Harbour
  • Hong Kong cityscape

For a country concentrated in such a small area, Hong Kong doesn’t lack for great attractions and varied activities. It is affectionately known as the “City of Life” and deservedly so. It is also known for its amazing skyline which gives Hong Kong the title the “world’s most vertical city” due to the more than 1220 skyscrapers which are all clustered closely together.

The name Hong Kong means “Fragrant Harbour” and it is the geographical lay-out that makes it interesting, consisting of 2 distinct parts, the Mainland which breaks down into the central area of Kowloon and the outlying area of the New Territories and the other, Hong Kong Island. Both Kowloon and Hong Kong Island are urban centres and are separated by the scenic Victoria Harbour. Another 200 offshore islands also make up Hong Kong, the largest and best known being Lantau.

Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997 but has now reverted to a special administrative region of China. To sum up the character of Hong Kong, it could be described as the place where East meets West. It is this mixture that makes it an exceptional destination.

A rewarding activity is to travel on one of the Star Ferries. These are very inexpensive and give you a wonderful bird’s eye views of both Hong Kong Island and the Mainland as you sail between the two. The shortest crossing between Kowloon and Central takes around 10 minutes each way.

An absolute must visit is to Victoria Peak via the Peak Tram which takes you to the highest point in Hong Kong and from where you will experience awe-inspiring panoramic views of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island and the Mainland from the Peak Tower viewing platform. You might consider while here taking the scenic 3.5 kilometre/2.2 mile peak circle walk around the peak. It is also a good place for dining and shopping.

Hong Kong tourism

Hong Kong’s culinary delights are world-renowned. You can choose from a large variety of different cuisines without any problem. One different dining experience is at the many floating restaurants in Aberdeen Harbour on Hong Island. This includes the well known Jumbo Floating Restaurant, an excellent place for lunch or dinner.

For shopping, the choices are manifold. You can easily find modern shopping malls and designer boutiques but you can also find inexpensive bargains at the many local markets. A couple of the better known ones are the Ladies’ Market in Mongkok, Kowloon which offers 100 stalls selling clothing and accessories and the Temple Street Night Market which sells everything from trinkets to electronics, antiques and clothing. Another major shopping venue is the iconic Stanley Market on Hong Kong Island which is located among a string of alleyways and narrow streets and mainly frequented by overseas visitors searching for inexpensive souvenirs.

Hong Kong is definitely not all about eating and shopping, important as they are. The Symphony of Lights is a nightly multimedia show of beamed lights involving more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour taking place at 8 pm and lasting 13 minutes.  You might want to take the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world which starts at the foot of Hong Kong Island and travels uphill for 800 metres/880 yards and takes around 20 minutes passing through some typical and interesting Hong Kong neighbourhoods.

You can always enjoy a leisurely harbour cruise any time of the night or day or perhaps take a ferry to Lantau Island or a hydrofoil to nearby Macau

On the cultural side, there are many museums to enjoy such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. For something different, try the Flagstaff House of Tea Ware.

The Happy Valley Racecourse offers the opportunity for a flutter on the horses every Wednesday evening. Ocean Park is a marine life theme park blending entertainment with education. For family fun, Hong Kong has its own Disneyland located on Lantau Island.  Other ways to get to know Hong Kong include a visit to the Sky100 observation deck on the 100th floor of Hong Kong’s tallest building, the International Commerce Centre or a stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade which runs along the harbourfront of Kowloon with great skyline views and hosts the Cultural Centre, the Space Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Avenue of the Stars.  Madame Tussauds can be found on Victoria Peak.

Perhaps it might not be the first activity to come to mind, but one can swim at one of Hong Kong’s pleasant sandy beaches such as the ones at the far side of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay.

There are a number of old buildings worth visiting such as the Man Mo Temple, Hong Kong’s oldest, located on Hong Kong Island and the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden in Kowloon.

The island of Lantau certainly deserves some time. There is the exceptional Ngong Ping 360 cable ride which takes 25 minutes and runs across the island offering outstanding panoramic views of the surrounding area. You can also take in the Big Buddha at the Po Lin Monastery and the colourful Tao O fishing village

Hong Kong hosts many interesting events such as the Hong Kong rugby sevens in the late spring, the annual Hong Kong marathon which attracts over 75,000 participants and the colourful week long Cheung Chau Bun Festival on the island of the same name.

A visit to Hong Kong will certainly be both enjoyable and entertaining no matter how long you spend there.

No matter what your interests are, it is almost certain that Hong Kong can satisfy them. Book one of our Hong Kong tours today and start exploring this vibrant city.
