Situated south-southwest of India, in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands. The islands are grouped into 26 coral atolls and feature 200 inhabited islands, plus 80 islands with tourist resorts for a Maldives vacation. Malé is the capital and most populous city in the Republic of Maldives. Malé is located on the southern edge of the North Malé Atoll, though administratively, it sits independently.

About Malé

Traditionally, Malé was known as King’s Island and was where the ancient Maldive Royal dynasties ruled and resided. While the palace and its picturesque forts and bastions were all destroyed after the abolition of the monarchy, the only remaining monument left is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, a decorative mosque constructed in 1658 AD, and made of coral stone.

Formerly a walled city, this central island of Malé now features a commercial harbor, as well as the centre of all administration and bureaucracy. This urban centre has seen significant growth over the past few years and is considered one of the world’s most densely populated islands.
