Islands Brochure request

It’s not untrue to say that a Fiji vacation would have everything one could expect from a tropical paradise. Not only is it an all year round destination due to its geographical location and tropical climate but there are numerous other attractive reasons to travel to Fiji.

Fiji is part of Melanesia as are the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. Imagine not only pristine sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and soft coral reefs but add lush green vegetation, coconut plantations, volcanic mountains, remote islands and a unique culture to this list.

Fiji is actually made up of 330 individual islands of which 106 are inhabited. It is basically an archipelago. The major attractions are naturally the Fiji resorts and therefore many of our Fiji vacations include a stay at one or more of these beautiful places. Tahiti is famous for underwater bungalows, but Fiji has beachfront ones called Bures. You can stay in a wooden hut with a thatched straw roof with enough charm to make you feel like you have wandered way off the beaten path or you can stay at a luxury resort hotel with every facility imaginable.

Once you have decided on the type of accommodation you would like on your Fiji vacation, the next is to consider where. Let’s start with some of the highlights of this destination. There are two main large islands, Viti Levu where most of the population live and Vanua Levu which is much quieter.

In Viti Levu, although you might not stay in the capital, the city of Suva, you should definitely consider a visit there. 75% of Fiji’s inhabitants live there making it a lively bustling place. Its character has been formed by the many different ethnic cultures that mingle there giving the city a multicultural feel. Take in the colonial style architecture and the many excellent modern shopping malls. Try a visit to the Fiji Museum which displays everything connected to the history of the country from musical instruments to cannibal utensils (there was a time when Fijians were cannibals!). Visit the Municipal Market, a lively fruit and vegetable market or the Curio and Handicraft Market for fantastic deals on local merchandise. Or perhaps enjoy the Botanical Gardens of Thurston with its varieties of palms, gingers, water lilies and other local flora.

The nearby Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is a true lush rain forest. Here you may spot a sulphur-breasted musk parrot, Fiji warblers or goshawks. There are natural swimming holes along the walking trails. Probably, the most popular resort area is around Nadi (pronounced Nandi) which is where all International flights arrive. Here you will find an abundance of Fijian resorts.

Close to Nadi is Denarau Island (not strictly an island) 5 kilometres/3 miles from Nadi where are located a number of luxury resort hotels. Denarau is also the departure point for ferries and cruises to the outer islands of Fiji. A place to visit here is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant with its beautiful orchids, lily ponds and many other exotic plants. Spend a day hunting down souvenirs at the local open-air market and look for local hand-made crafts, such as woven baskets, carved wooden bowls and cannibal forks, the kind once used by tribal kings at feasts. South Pacific black pearls are elegant and a memorable souvenir.  Also check out a fire-walking ceremony, the most famous ritual of the local culture and today performed by the men of the islands, the descendants of warriors, as a tribute to their tribal history.

Between Nadi and the capital, Suva, is the Coral Coast with 80 kilometres/50 miles of barrier reef beaches and with a selection of good resorts is another consideration for a Fiji vacation with a good choice and range of accommodation. From here it is easy to visit places such as Pacific Harbour, an upscale community with many boutique shops and restaurants plus the home of the major golf course in the country, the Pearl Fiji Championship Golf Course.

Also located between Suva and Nadi is the interesting town of Lautoka where a must is to visit a Sugar Mill (sugar is together with tourism, the most important industry in Fiji).

There are a couple of interesting optional attractions on the Coral coast. Try a visit to the Sigatoka River in the Fijian interior. On a tour, one can not only travel by jet boat but also meet the local people and find out about typical village lifestyles.  The other is a tour to the Nalesutale Highlands. Partake in the traditional welcome Kava ceremony then visit the rainforest and the cascading waterfalls plus the Mountains of the Sleeping Giants. Nestled at the foot of these mountains is an ancestral village

Vanua Levu is reached by air or by ferry from Viti Levu. The island is rugged, untrammeled and the coast is surrounded by an extensive system of coral reefs. It is much quieter and serene than its sister island, Viti Levu. The capital is Labasa but the main town which attracts visitors is Savusavu which has incredibly beautiful surroundings.

The most striking aspects about Savusavu are the incredible beauty of Savusavu Bay and the hot springs scattered liberally around the city limits. Steam rises literally from the cracks in the sidewalks. Marvel at the sweeping bay with its sloping green hills dotted with hibiscus flowers.

Want something more remote but just as beautiful and amazing? Then consider a stay on one of the Outer Islands of Fiji. You could consider the Mamanuca group of islands, a volcanic archipelago consisting of 20 islands, most with crystal clear waters, fringed sandy beaches and live coral. Gorgeous little South Sea Island is one of the treasures of the Mamanuca Islands. Crystal clear waters, coral reefs and thousands of colourful of tropical fish surround the island - perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving. Then there is Beachcomber Island with its huge range of watersports due to the magnificent coral reefs. Enjoy coral viewing on a glass-bottom boat and perhaps see the black tip reef whale. If there were ever a place where time stood still, it would be Castaway Island, a true oasis providing solace where one can forget about the stress of daily life.

Other islands to consider here for your Fiji vacation are Treasure Island which has a wonderful marine reserve and is a great place to swim or snorkel, Bounty Island, a natural wilderness and largely untouched and Malolo Island offering scenic walks and magnificent panoramic views.

Another group of islands are the Yasawa Islands which can be reached by seaplane or boat and definitely more remote. Here you have a choice of 30 resorts spread over 12 major islands, all beautiful and unspoilt and ideal for hiking swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. You will be surrounded by plantations of papayas, mangoes and many other types of fruit. The limestone caves of Sawa-i-Lau here are famous for being one of the locations for the movie The Blue Lagoon. The inner limestone cave of Sawa-i-Lau is only accessible by swimming under a rocky veil so getting there isn’t for the faint of heart.

One definitely relaxing way to enjoy the more out of the way islands including the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands is to take a Fiji cruise ranging from 4 days to up to a week sailing from Denarau.

Finally, the Fijian people. Most native Fijians still lead a life centered around their village. Community is very important to their culture and most wealth and resources are divided among the residents of a village. Even most of the resort staff employed go home to their villages in the evening. What make these islands so enchanting are the people. Establish eye contact for a second, and you will find yourself downing kava, the local liquor with the local chief and shouting “Bula!” meaning welcome. Fiji is truly the friendliest place in the world.
