Dunedin is New Zealand’s fifth largest city and the second largest on the South Island. It is known as a student city due to its many educational facilities including the University of Otago. It is also a city with a slower pace of life. The skyline is dominated by a tree-clad range of hills which are the remnants of a volcanic crater and Mount Cargill, the most prominent, is an excellent place to enjoy panoramic views of the city dujring Dunedin tours on a New Zealand vacation.

Dunedin, which means Edinburgh in Celtic, has a number of historic buildings which combine nicely with the modern shops, cafes and bars in the city centre especially around the eight-sided Octagon. The country’s most photographed heritage building is surprisingly the Dunedin Railway Station with its magnificent Flemish architecture.

New Zealand’s only castle, Lanarch Castle, perched on top of a hill with great views and 35 acres of beautiful gardens, is an attractive historical building. Dunedin can also boast about having the steepest thoroughfare in the world in Baldwin Street.

Not far from the centre are a number of excellent beaches along the spectacular and varied coastline, some suitable for surfing and others for safe swimming. Out of town on the Otago Peninsula one can view some of the world’s rarest wildlife including the yellow-eyed penguin.

For walkers and hikers on New Zealand tours, there are many scenic trails both in and around Dunedin.
