Located in western Argentina, Mendoza is the capital city of the province that shares its name. When on Argentina tours, the city is situated in a region of foothills and high plains on the eastern side of the Andes.

Mendoza was founded on 2 March 1561 by Spanish conquistador Pedro del Castillo. The 17th century witnessed great prosperity as the indigenous populations were used for slave labour and because of the Jesuit presence found there. Despite such prosperity which continued with strong agricultural production, the city suffered a major setback with a devastating earthquake in 1861. The city was rebuilt with urban designs and innovations to prevent such destruction in the future.

Today, Mendoza is famous for its wine production and the area around greater Mendoza is the largest wine-producing area in Latin America. It is considered one of nine “Great Capitals of Wine” internationally, serving as a base for exploring hundreds of wineries that exist in the region. Mendoza is also often used as a stopover for climbers and trekkers on their way to Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas. While offering a somewhat laid-back pace during the day, the city comes to life at night when the many bars, restaurants and cafes fill up for the evening to be enjoyed on an Argentina vacation.
