Patagonia is a region at the southern end of the South American continent that is shared by Argentina and Chile. It encompasses parts of the Andes mountain range, the Atlantic Ocean, the Tierra del Fuego peninsula and more on a  Chile vacation.

While human habitation has existed in the region for thousands of years, it is believed that the first European contact occurred in 1520 with Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Others followed to explore the area including Charles Darwin, who spent a great deal of time studying Patagonia. By the middle of the 19th century, both Argentina and Chile began to expand south encouraging European settlers. 

The 20th century witnessed tourism becoming central to the region’s economy initially attracting backpackers and then cruise passengers en route to Antarctica as well as adventure sports enthusiasts. 

Tourism is still a vital part of Patagonia as it offers several interesting and unique destinations.  One of the principal attractions on Chile vacations is the Perito Moreno Glacier where visitors can embark on walking circuits of this most impressive glacier. Others may choose to venture to Valdés Peninsula, an important nature reserve and World Heritage Site which hosts a variety of marine mammals. 

There is also Torres del Paine National Park with mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers, it has become an incredibly popular hiking destination.
