El Salvador is the smallest country in area in the whole of the Americas but it is also the most densely populated in Central America. Its principal tourist attraction is its natural beauty with its active volcanoes, pristine forests and sparkling lakes, all to be enjoyed on an El Salvador vacation. The country can be divided into the mountain ranges and the coastal plain bordering the Pacific Ocean. Wildlife abounds here with 500 bird, 1000 butterfly, 400 orchid and 800 tree species.

The capital, San Salvador, bustles with energy with its wide avenues and boulevards. It is the 2nd largest city in Central America and lies in a valley surrounded by mountains. It has a rich Spanish heritage; some of the interesting buildings are the new cathedral, the National Palace and the National Theatre.

Suchitoto is an attractive town lying just north of San Salvador known for its church and cobblestone streets. Here there are a number of art galleries, craft stores and other cultural centres.

El Salvador is known for its national parks. El Imposible National Park named after a perilous gorge offers an abundance of plants and wildlife, the latter including the puma, wild boars and the black crested eagle. There are good hiking trails here where one can take guided El Salvador tours.

Volcanoes National Park contains three major volcanoes. There are guided tours to the crater of one from which the views are excellent. The park is also a major bird sanctuary boasting 17 different species of humming birds.

Beaches are also an attraction in El Salvador, Icacal Beach has a sea turtle nursery. There exist 8 different species of this turtle of which 4 reside in El Salvador. La Libertad is the premier beach resort and best surfing destination in the country on an El Salvador vacation.

Joya de Ceren, a UNESCO protected town, is known as the “Pompeii of the Americas” due to being buried under the ashes of a volcano many hundreds of years ago. Today, it is an archaeological site with interesting pre Columbian treasures on display.

Other attractions on El Salvador tours include the Ruta Las Flores (Route of the Flowers), thus named for the explosion of wildflowers between October and February. Travelling through this area and its coffee plantations, one comes across a number of small colonial style villages. Horseback riding and mountain biking are popular here. Another attraction is the Gulf Islands around which one can take a pleasant boat cruise and enjoy the local beaches.
