Berlin is the capital city of and the largest city in Germany and has a population of approximately 4.5 million within its metropolitan area. It is best known for its historical associations as the German capital, internationalism and tolerance, lively nightlife, its many cafés, clubs, and bars, street art, and numerous museums, palaces, and other sites of historic interest. Berlin's architecture is quite varied and enjoyable on German vacations.

Although badly damaged in the final years of World War II and broken apart during the Cold War, Berlin has reconstructed itself, especially with reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It is now possible to see examples of many different historic periods in a short time within the city centre, from a few surviving medieval buildings near the Alexanderplatz to the ultra-modern glass and steel structures in Potsdamer Platz. Because of its tumultuous history, Berlin remains a city with many distinctive neighbourhoods to be experienced on travel to
Germany.

Most people under 40 in Berlin are able to speak English with varying degrees of fluency. Basic French and Russian are partly spoken because French in West Berlin and Russian in East Berlin were taught in schools.

Berlin is a beautiful city, so allow enough time to get to see the sights. The public transport system is superb. Be sure to note the final station/stop of the S-Bahn or U-Bahn, since that is usually the way direction of travel indicated.

Berlin has a wonderful selection of museums. An excellent purchase is the three-day Museum Pass which grants entrance to all the normal exhibitions of the approximately 55 state-run museums and public foundations. Most museums are closed on Mondays. "Museum Island" is an area best known for the vast Pergamon Museum which houses an extensive collection of ancient Greek, ancient Middle-Eastern and Islamic art and architecture.

Other museums which are on Museum Island are the Altes Museum with Egyptian and antique collections, the Alte Nationalgalerie with mainly German paintings of the 19th century and the reopened Bode-Museum with its fantastically presented sculpture collection and Byzantine art. The recently reopened Neues Museum houses an Egyptian collection, Neanderthal and other prehistoric archaeological finds and some of the treasures unearthed at Troy. Close to Potsdamer Platz is another cluster of cultural buildings including museums. There is the Gemäldegalerie with its thousands of European paintings from the 13th to the 18th century, the Neue Nationalgalerie designed by Mies van der Rohe with art from the 20th Century and the Musikinstrumenten Museum has an extensive range of historical and unusual instruments on display.

Other major city attractions include the following on German tours. The Charlottenburg Palace complex is surrounded by a unique baroque garden that merges into a landscaped park. The Hamburger Bahnhof Museum is a contemporary art gallery located in a former train station.  The Jewish Museum offers an extensive history of the Jewish people in Germany. The Berlin Wall Museum is an open-air exhibition and memorial. The Mauermuseum at Checkpoint Charlie is situated between the two original Berlins at the most famous historical checkpoint. The DDR Museum is a small museum which gives a good insight into life in former Eastern Germany. There are many other interesting museums too numerous to mention.

Other interesting city attractions include the Bundestag in the Reichstag building which is a major landmark and the seat of government, the Tiergarten Park which contains several notable sculptures and is full of tree-lined pedestrian avenues, the Brandenburg Gate, a former city gate rebuilt in the late 18th century as a neoclassical triumphal arch and now one of the most well-known landmarks in the city, the very contemporary Potsdamer Platz situated on the former frontier between East and West Berlin, the Berliner Philharmonie, home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the lively and sophisticated Kurfurstendam, the main shopping street, all available on travel to Germany.
