Athens, the enchanting capital of Greece, has always been the birthplace of civilization. It is the city where democracy was born and which was once the centre of the ancient World. Today, on a Greece vacation, it is the political, social, cultural, financial and commercial centre of Greece.

It is situated in the prefecture of Attica and extends to the peninsula that reaches up to Central Greece. It is surrounded by mountains to the north and east and the Saronic Gulf to the south and west. The sun shines in Athens all year round and it has one of the best climates in Europe with mild winters and hot summers. Next door to Athens is the port of Piraeus, the central commercial port of the capital. 

Athens and the surrounding area have some of the most important archaeological monuments in the country on Greek vacations. Who hasn’t heard of the Acropolis, the most important site in the city and one of the most recognizable monuments in the world? It is a rocky hill towering over the city and is in evidence almost everywhere you walk. It is the most significant reference point of ancient Greek culture as well as the symbol of the city. The first inhabited remains on the Acropolis date from the Neolithic period.

On top of the Acropolis is the Parthenon, the most important and characteristic monument of the ancient Greek civilization which still remains its international symbol. It was dedicated to Athena Parthenos (the Virgin), the patron goddess of Athens and was built between 447 and 438 B.C.  The Parthenon is a Doric temple and a true symbol of ancient Greek culture. Syntagma is the square in front of the Parliament, formerly the King's Palace, and is considered the main square of Athens. The square is a central point to access all the major attractions of Athens, particularly 'Museum Mile' along Vassilissis Sophias Avenue Here most of Athens’ museums are located including the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Byzantine Museum. At the bottom part of Syntagma Square is Ermou Street, the main shopping district of Athens.  

The Plaka is a self-contained area. It is the old historical neighbourhood of Athens, clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis and incorporates a labyrinth of streets and neoclassical architecture. It is known as the "Neighbourhood of the Gods" due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. It is also the site of many open-air restaurants. Monastiraki, literally meaning little monastery, is a flea market neighbourhood in the old town and is one of the principal shopping districts of Athens. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores, and is a major tourist attraction on trips to Greece for bargain shopping.

Mount Lycabettus is a limestone hill in Athen which can be reached by a funicular railway. At a height of 277 metres/908 feet above sea level, the hill is the highest point in the city that surrounds it. Pine trees cover its base and at its two peaks are the 19th-century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant. Kolonaki is the area at the base of Lycabettus hill, full of boutiques catering to well-heeled customers by day and with bars and more fashionable restaurants by night plus galleries and museums. This is regarded as one of the more prestigious areas of the city. 

Other areas close to the city are the beach resorts which include Glyfada and Vouliagmeni both easily accessible by local transportation. A short distance from Athens is the spectacular Cape Sounion, where the shimmering Temple of Poseidon stands on a cliff-top. The views are stunning and it should ideally be visited at sunset to experience an amazing spectacle on a Greece vacation.
