Black History Tour Group - Senegal, Gambia & Ghana


Below is a sample itinerary of a past Goway Group. It is provided to give you an idea of what we have already done & what you might also consider doing.

Day 1

Fly Hometown to New York

Fly New York to Dakar. Air Afrique RK 560 1400/0230+1

We arrive early Sunday morning in Dakar where we are met and transferred to our hotel.

Accommodation: Meridien President Hotel (2 Nights)

Day 2

Arrive Dakar

Welcome to Senegal. After breakfast this morning, we transfer to the Ker Moussa Monastery to attend Mass celebrated with traditional African instruments and joining of services with a local minister. This afternoon is free. You might like to enjoy an optional buffet lunch with African Ballet around the pool at our hotel (own expense). This evening a "welcome" dinner is included at our hotel with a lecture about the Great West African Empires. BD

Day 3

Ferry Dakar to Banjul

We transfer down to the waterfront and board the Kassoumaye Steamship for our 3 hour excursion to Gambia and its capital, Banjul. On arrival in Banjul, we enjoy a city tour including a visit to the markets and a tye-dye factory. Dinner included at our hotel this evening. BD

Day 4

In Banjul

After breakfast, we take a pilgrimage to Juffure by boat and visit the native house of the famous author Alex Haley. Time to visit with the family before transferring by boat back to Banjul and our hotel. Lunch is included on our return journey. Dinner is included at our hotel. BLD

Day 5

Coach Banjul to Dakar

We leave Banjul and travel through the countryside visiting various villages of different ethnic groups on our way back to Dakar and our hotel. Dinner tonight at a local restaurant featuring African Ballet. BD

Day 6

In Dakar

A full Day tour of Dakar today. Time to view its pure African architecture style and bustling lifestyle. We'll also visit the markets and the handicraft village of Soumbedioune. A delicious lunch and lecture on "The Great West African Empires" is included. Late afternoon return to our hotel. Dinner tonight is included at a typical Senegalese Restaurant. BLD

Day 7

In Dakar

Another full Day tour today takes us to Goree Island, the so-called "Door of no Return of many African Americans. Included is a tour and lecture delivered by the curator on the theme: "300 years of slave trading in West Africa." We'll also enjoy a delicious lunch while on the Island. Dinner tonight is included at a seaside restaurant. BLD

Day 8

In Dakar

A full Day tour takes us to Pink Lake Retba and the fisherman village of Cayar to meet the people and learn more about traditional fishing methods. Lunch is included. Later this afternoon, we return to our hotel where we'll have dinner replete with a "naming ceremony" at the Meridien Hotel before our late evening transfer to the airport to connect with our flight to Accra. BLD

Day 9

Fly Dakar to Accra Air Afrique RK 570 0340/0645

Welcome to Ghana! Upon arrival, we are met and transferred to our hotel where our rooms have been pre-registered for our early arrival. The remainder of the Day is free. Tonight we enjoy a "welcome" dinner at the Kokrobite Restaurant and have a briefing on our stay in Ghana with our guide. D

Day 10

Coach Accra to Cape Coast

A fascinating Day today as we head to the beautiful Cape Coast and Elmina to visit the slave castle (The Dungeon) where the slave trade took place on the African Coast. Dinner tonight in the hotel restaurant. BD

Accommodation: Coconut Grove Hotel (1 Night)

Day 11

Coach Cape Coast to Kumasi

We continue to the Ahsanti Region and Kumasi this morning, home of the West African Royalty and the home of famous Ghanaan Kinteh Cloth. Time to visit the Maya Palace and the war museum. Dinner included at our hotel this evening. BD

Accommodation: Royal Basin Hotel (2 nights)

Day 12

In Kumasi

Our touring of the Kumasi area continues today with visits to the craft market and Bowre the Kenteh Village. Dinner at a local restaurant this evening. BD

Day 13

Coach Kumasi to Accra

We head back to Accra this morning. This afternoon we enjoy a city tour. A special "farewell" dinner is included at our hotel. BD

Day 14

Fly Accra to Dakar, Fly Dakar to New York, Fly New York to Hometown

A free Day for last minute shopping or just relaxing at our hotel before our evening transfer to the airport to connect with our flights to New York. B
