Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then meet your guide and depart for your walking tour of downtown Winnipeg. Immerse yourself in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike on this expanded version of our themed walking tour. You will learn what life was like in Winnipeg in the years leading up the strike, from earlier labour strikes to a city-wide influenza epidemic, as well as the events of the Winnipeg General Strike and what happened in the years to follow. Hear about the impact of the Strike and how it influenced such individuals as Jessie Kirk (the first woman on city council), the Notorious Helen Armstrong, and Labour politicians including J.S. Woodsworth.

Next, head to the Exchange District, home to one of the most well-preserved collection of heritage buildings from the turn of the 20th century. Learn how architectural styles evolved as Winnipeg grew, from modest brick and mortar warehouses and terracotta skyscrapers to the modernist structures of the 1960s and ’70s. Along the way, you’ll learn about the art and artists that have made the Exchange a thriving arts hub in Winnipeg.

Meet your guide and head to The Forks, a large community hub and market on the banks where the Assiniboine River meets the Red. First, visit The Original Pancake House, a Winnipeg breakfast staple. After you’ve had your fill of pancakes, start your orientation tour of The Forks, learning the history of this important landmark and former Aboriginal Trading Post. Continue the tour with a 1 hour ride on the river, passing by sites such as the Legislative Building, St. Boniface Cathedral and the Provencher Bridge.

Next, head to the Museum of Human Rights for a guided tour. This tour, developed in keeping with the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, explores the connections between contemporary issues and historic violations of Indigenous rights. Experience a 360-degree film in a circular theatre, a four-storey clay artwork, stories of survival and many exhibits throughout the Museum’s galleries. Participate in activities that challenge dominant world views and reflect upon Indigenous Peoples’ resistance and resilience in the face of genocidal policies. Discuss the power of breaking down stereotypes and using respectful language. Consider pathways to taking individual action towards reconciliation. Upon the conclusion of the tour, feel free to explore the gallery on your own.

Enjoy the remainder of your day at The Forks shopping local handicrafts and artwork, or tasting the many delicacies of the food stalls in the market. Enjoy a brew at The Common in the main market square, or enjoy a stroll along the riverwalk, a path that follows the banks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.
