Kerala Backwaters - River Escapes FAQs

  • Kerala Backwaters - River Escapes

What currency do I need onboard the Kerala Backwaters Houseboat?

The local currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). US Dollar bills are widely used and accepted almost everywhere. We recommend that passengers carry some US dollars in small denominations for miscellaneous spending. Vendors who do accept credit cards usually add a handling commission and also currency exchange charges. On the Kerala Houseboat, major international credit cards are accepted for on board costs including MasterCard and Visa (10% commission on cash withdrawals).

Will I require visas for my journey?

Advice on up-to-date requirements should be sought from the consulate office in your country of residence, or from your local travel agent. At present, a Visa is required for both US and Canadian travelers and should be acquired well in advance of your journey to India. For general guidance: Your passport must be valid for ten years and have at least six months remaining at the time of entry into your country of residence.

When is the best time to go on the Kerala Houseboats?

Peak season is from December to the end of January when the weather is cooler and dry, but it's possible to hire a houseboat all year round. Some people find that the monsoon season has special appeal and choose to combine their houseboat hire with ayurvedic treatment. March to May gets very hot and humid, so if you hire a houseboat during this time, air conditioning will be available.

Is there sightseeing during the journey?

Yes. There will be plenty of sightseeing in Cochin and it is optional to stop and visit a local village along the riverside of the Alleppey Canals.

What do I take to wear on board the Kerala Houseboat?

The atmosphere onboard is relaxed. For dinner, an appropriate dress is smart casual, e.g. open-neck shirt and jacket for men. Formal wear is not required.

How many people are on board?

The houseboats are very intimate and private, having only one, two or three bedrooms on board.

Do I need to be concerned about Malaria?

Clients should seek advice from their doctor regarding relevant inoculations and prophylactics for travel in India.

How far in advance should we book?

This is a popular river cruise, with very limited rooms, so the earlier the better!

Do we need a pre and post-night?

It is recommended that your book a pre and post-night in Cohin coordinate with your international flight.
