MELISSA MATHESON

CENTRAL & SOUTH AMERICA

DESTINATION SPECIALIST

Ever since I was a wee one I always wanted to travel and see as much of the world as possible. This carried on after secondary school as I decided to attend tourism college and get my diploma. Soon after I graduated college I was hired at Goway Travel and haven't looked back. I have worked in our Toronto office as well as our Vancouver office. I have traveled to more than 30 countries and the adventures continue.

My favourite places

  • Machu Picchu

    Central & South America

Peru is a country in South America that's home to a section of Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan citadel high in the Andes mountains. The region around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, and the colonial city of Cusco, is rich in archaeological sites. On Peru’s arid Pacific coast is Lima, the capital, with a preserved colonial centre and important collections of pre-Columbian art.

  • Thailand Beaches

    Asia

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. In Bangkok, the capital, an ultramodern cityscape rises next to quiet canal side communities and the iconic temples of Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the Emerald Buddha Temple. Nearby beach resorts include bustling Pattaya and fashionable Hua Hin.

  • Ireland

    UK Europe

Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. From the Causeway Coast and the Wild Atlantic Way to the Sunny South East and the 11 cities in between, now's the time to start exploring the island of Ireland.

  • Easter Island

    Central & South America

Easter Island is a Chilean island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern-most point of the Polynesian Triangle. Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people. In 1995, UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site, with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National Park.

Did you know?

  • When traveling, always keep a notepad and pen on you. This way you can write down specific words as you learn them and communicate more with the locals.
  • Guinea pigs may be adorable, docile pets in the US, but in Peru, they are an important source of food and feature heavily in Peruvian folklore.
  • South America is famous for very important discoveries of dinosaur fossils. This excavation is still continuing, and has been for the last 30 years.
  • The driest place on Earth is the Atacama Desert in Chile. It's a must see.
