My journeys through Africa have taken me to Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Morocco, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, and South Africa. Some of the best experiences I have had are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, hot air ballooning over the Serengeti, seeing the Wildebeest Migration, exploring Stone Town in Zanzibar, snorkeling in the Red Sea, visiting the tomb of Tutankhamen, camping inside Ngorongoro Crater, micro-lighting over Victoria Falls, shark cage diving, mokoroing in the Okavango Delta, trekking with gorillas in Bwindi, and riding the luxurious Rovos Rail.

My favourite places

  • Manta Resort

    Africa & Middle East

My night in the underwater room at Manta Resort was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The floating room has three levels and is anchored in a lagoon with crystal clear water and tons of different colourful fish. I had the best time ever swimming and snorkeling around the room during the day then lying under the stars on the upper deck after a delicious seafood dinner and finally retiring to the underwater room where I witnessed a 24-hour live show going on around me.

  • Ngorongoro Crater

    Africa & Middle East

This lodge is perched on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater and has the most breathtaking views you can ever imagine. I love the elegance, opulence, and romance of the eclectic décor where crystal chandeliers hang from a thatched roof and billowing silk curtains frame the glorious views. This is where rose petals and candle light highlight my butler-drawn bath and I can curl up by the cozy fire with a glass of sherry at the end of a beautiful day. This is perfection.

  • Lion Sands Narina

    Africa & Middle East

I loved my room at Lion Sands Narina Lodge. The tasteful décor, spacious open layout, stunning view overlooking the river, private plunge pool, indoor and outdoor shower, and a bath tub with a view were all great. Sipping coffee on my deck at sunrise and watching the elephants pass right by my deck was the best experience.

Did you know?

  • East Africa is one of the best wildlife destinations, but it can get pricey. To avoid this, travel in the low season months of April and May. It's the rainy season, but you still get to see a lot of wildlife and it's worth the extra savings.
  • Avoid planning a trip to Madagascar from January to March as this is usually the cyclone season on the island.
  • The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town is South Africa's most-visited destination.
