New Galapagos Cruise Is a New Style of Holiday Getaway

Goway’s new Christmas cruise offers a difference to tempt any would-be Darwin.

While many North Americans will spend the holidays surrounded by extended family and friends, an intrepid few will spend them surrounded by giant tortoises, Blue-footed Boobies and iguanas.

Even with stiff competition from historic Quito, Galapagos tours remain Ecuador’s main attraction. This volcanic archipelago is well known for its wide range of species, including an estimated 56 species of bird, 27 of which are unique to the Galapagos. With little history of settlement, the animals are also among the world’s least timid around humans. It’s not unusual for guests to come within feet of native birds or iguanas, nor do the close encounters end at the shoreline. A snorkeling expedition here might bring the visitor alongside sea lions or majestic rays.

Unsurprisingly, the Islands are a major centre for research and conservation, with 97.5% of their land area designated a national park. Santa Cruz in particular is home to the Galapagos giant tortoise breeding program, and an ideal spot to see the local animals up close.

The Galapagos Islands do however have some human history to discover. Baltra Island was home to a US Navy airbase during World War 2 and is now the final resting place of several Navy barges. For the complete animal, geological and human story of the Galapagos, the Museum of Natural History in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is a must visit.

Both Santa Cruz and Baltra Island are included on Goway Travel’s special Christmas cruise through the Galapagos Islands, along with many other sites throughout the archipelago.

Departing December 20 or 21, passengers will cruise on board the Coral I or II for 6 days, or 7 days if departing December 24. All meals, taxes, park fees and transfers are included. Prices start at US$4130 per person from Miami and C$4842 per person from Toronto. Both prices are based on Dec 20 departure and include international and domestic airfares to the Galapagos from Quito. These prices are available until May 31st. Places on this itinerary are strictly limited and will sell out.
