Opera in the Holy Land

The music of Verdi adds an unforgettable night to Goway’s popular Israel tour

One of the world’s most majestic sights will play host to some of its most beautiful and famous music when the Israeli Opera Festival descends upon Masada in June.

The Israeli Opera has staged the outdoor festival every year since 2010. At the foot of Masada’s 1,300 foot cliffs, patrons have enjoyed some of the world’s best loved operas including Carmen and Aida. In 2014, the festival will bring Verdi’s La Traviata to this incredible outdoor setting.

Accompanied by the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion under conductor Daniel Oren, the production is one of Israel’s most anticipated cultural events. The 2014 festival also includes guest performances by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Idan Raichel Project, along with a weekend-long celebration of Mozart, including Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute.

Since its excavation in the 1960’s, Masada has become an essential part of Israel’s tourist map. Yet for almost two millennia, it remained largely undisturbed. Overlooking the Negev Desert on the shores of the Dead Sea, this ancient hilltop fortress saw a wide variety of uses throughout the first century. It is best known however as the site where over 950 Sicarii rebels allegedly chose suicide over surrender to the Roman army. This act of defiance has left a powerful mark on the Jewish identity. In fact, many Israeli soldiers are sworn in atop the plateau, proclaiming that ‘Masada shall never fall again.’

Masada is a regular inclusion on several of Goway Travel’s Israel tours. In June 2014, the company is thrilled to offer a night at the Israeli Opera Festival as part of its Treasures of Israel trip. This 9-day round-trip from Tel Aviv encompasses Galilee and the Golan Heights, a Kibbutz tour, visits to the Dead Sea and Bethlehem, and of course historic Jerusalem.

Guests departing on June 12 will enjoy a performance of La Traviata at Masada, along with all that the regular Treasures of Israel itinerary has to offer.

This unique and unforgettable trip is priced at just US$2262/CA$2327, including airport transfers, 8 nights accommodation, 7 days sightseeing with an English-speaking guide, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, daily buffet breakfast, 2 dinners at the Kibbutz hotel, all specified entrance fees and tickets to La Traviata at Masada.
