New Outback Self-Drive Adventures Hit Australia’s Open Roads

With Goway and Air New Zealand, globetrotters are hitting Downunder’s roads less travelled.

Many Australia vacations take in sights such as Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) and Kakadu. But more and more travellers are choosing to experience the vastness of Australia’s red centre from behind the wheel. There are few countries on earth offering a better self-drive adventure.

It’s a common mistake to think Uluru can be seen as a day trip from the outback town of Alice Springs. It’s possible, but only with a very expensive return flight! Flying into Ayers Rock airport however gives travellers plenty of time to see the sacred site, along with others in the region, most notably Kata Tjuta (also known as the Olgas).

With drives ranging from 4-7 hours drive between towns including Alice Springs, and Tennant Creek some planning and early starts are required. But the rewards are great. A carefully tailored self-drive itinerary allows plenty of time at each of these stops, as well as sights along the roadside such as the mysterious Devil’s Marbles. Most of all however, it lets travellers truly feel the vastness of the Australian Outback, an environment as beautiful as it is desolate.

At the end of the road lies Darwin, via Kakadu National Park, one of Australia’s most impressive wilderness areas (and the heart of crocodile country!). Those just wanting to see the top end in detail can instead take a round-trip from Darwin including Kakadu and Katherine, home to Edith Falls, Cutta Cutta Caves and the historic School of the Air.

On Australia’s west coast, Perth is the world’s most isolated capital city. A self-drive from here can take in sights even most Australians will never see. Marine life lovers are in for a treat at Monkey Mia, where bottlenose dolphins have been coming inshore for feeding since the 1960’s. On the way back, the pristine beaches of Cervantes and the eerie Pinnacles Desert are both natural highlights.

The experts in outback tours for over 40 years, Goway Travel has partnered with Air New Zealand to create the ultimate range of new self-drive Aussie adventures. In addition to these great outback journeys, itineraries are also offered along Australia’s east coast and Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean Road.

Each self-drive trip includes airfare, accommodation and car rental. A Preplanned First Class self-drive option includes accommodation at 4-star hotels, plus a self-drive kit including maps, exclusive discounts and a AU$100 fuel card.

The 12-day Ayers Rock to Darwin Outback Self Drive (Preplanned First Class) starts at just US$2799/CA$3169, the 8-day Top End Outback Self Drive (Prepaid First Class) starts at US$2369/CA$2699, while the 12-day Perth to Monkey Mia Self Drive (Preplanned First Class) starts at US$2969/CA$3249. All trips depart from Los Angeles or Vancouver flying Air New Zealand. Special fares are available from other cities across North America.
