Namibia is located on the southwestern Atlantic coast of the African subcontinent. With a population of 2,113,077 people and an area of 825,615 square kilometres (318,696 square miles), it borders Angola, Botswana and South Africa. Within Namibia are four different landscapes, the Namib Desert, the Central Plateau, the Kalahari Desert and the Kavango and Caprivi regions.

The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world, believed to have been around for approximately forty-two million years. It is a long, coastal desert that runs the length of the country covering around 15% of Namibia.

The Central Plateau hosts the majority of Namibia’s towns and villages. It runs from north to south and is divided between mountains and sand-filled valleys. The plateau has an altitude of between 1000-2000 m (3,280-6,561 ft).

The Kalahari Desert is covered with ancient red sand and has sparse vegetation. It spreads into Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. To the north, it incorporates plains around the Etosha Pan as well as Kavango and Caprivi.

The Kavango region is dominated by the Kavango river and broad flood plains which make it much greener than the rest of the country. The Caprivi Strip is surrounded by four perennial rivers: the Chobe, Kwando, Linyanyi and Zambezi. These regions receive more rain than the rest of the country and as such host tropical forests, rivers and woodland savannahs.

Konigstein is the highest mountain in Namibia at 2,606 m (8,550 ft) and is located in the Brandberg Massif. To the west of Brandberg are the Gobobose Mountains and to the south are Groot Spitzkoppe and Klein Spitzkoppe. To the north of Brandberg are the Kaokoveld Mountains that run into the Jou-bert Mountains. Other ranges include the Khomas Highlands, the Erongo Mountains, the Otavi Mountains, the Eros Mountains, the Schwarz Mountains and the Great Karas Mountains.
