Social Conventions
Turkish people are very hospitable and social. There is a laidback approach to clothing, however, it is advisable that beach clothing remains at the beach, and people should dress conservatively when visiting mosques or other religious areas. Shaking hands is the most common form of greeting in Turkey. If invited to a Turkish home, it is considered polite to bring a small gift. People love things from a visitor's home country, however, if that is not possible then pastries are the most common gift. Before giving alcohol, it is important to make sure that the host drinks.
Language
Turkish is the official language while the southeastern part of the country hosts a Kurdish speaking minority. French, German and English is common in tourist areas and large cities.
Religion
The majority of the population of Turkey is Muslim – mostly Sunni. There are small Christian and Jewish minorities.
